Well the reading aspect is pretty sad
[Read the article: Roundup: Books, birth control, James Brown and more]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I read around 10 to 12 books a year, luckily I commute on a train, so that's when I read, or on my lunch hour. Plus I read the news, Salon and Slate. But I've always read a ton, my whole family does, we never go anywhere without a book, especially if we know we might be waiting for other people or doctors and such. When i was a kid, I used to go to the library and take out the 8 books that were the limit and then return them in a week and take out 8 more; the librarians didn't believe I could read that much so they would quiz me to make sure I had earned my summer reading prizes.
My husband doesn't read as much and when he does, it's generally magazines like Discovery or sports news. He prefers non-fiction like Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking or Bill Bryson.
Though he did like reading the Harry Potter series.
My closest friends read, my co-workers read, we actually have a little sharing stack in the back of the office, they read on their breaks. So I suppose the national averages are correct, but around me, people read at least a few books a year.

Obama and Hillary
[Read the article: Barack Obama's Republican edge]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I agree with this article mainly because I have one friend who is a Dem who works for a political advertising company. She believes in Hillary because she believes Hillary is savvy enough to fight against the Rebublican hate machine, which I agree with. But what she doesn't seem to grasp is that most of us are tired of the fighting, I and others don't want any more of this us vs them, we're all americans and we just want shit to get done. I don't want to see another story about a bridge collapsing. No more of this we won't vote for this or we don't like this because such and such party came up with it.
I also have some Republican friends who used to be all about Bush, now they have to meekly admit that he is disaster and they have even uttered "worst president ever" and they laugh when Fred Thompson is mentioned. They have said that if Guiliani doesn't win the nomination, then they could see themselves voting for Obama if he wins our primary. They respect his Harvard background and the fact that he does not have a long resume appeals to them. They believe he could be much better at joining the country than sitting around listening to how shitty Clinton is. They are also tired of the legacies, they don't want a Bush Clinton Bush Clinton possible Jeb Bush era. They aren't bible thumpers though, they are more interested in fiscal responsibility and actually can't stand how much religion has invaded policy decisions. Such as for stem cell research.
So they've said if Clinton is nominated they will vote for whoever the republican candidate is, if Edwards is they will just not vote and if Obama wins, they may go vote and pick him after they get a chance to hear more from him.

Huh
[Read the article: "Anchorwoman" canceled]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There was a big advertising push for this show? If so I certainly didn't see it and I watch SYTYCD which is their most popular summer show.
The problems with Anchorwoman were that it was completely predictable. The pretty brunette who's professional, hates the new blonde bimbo. The bimbo thinks she's smart but can't seem to shut up and listen. She's constantly showing her clevage and still doesn't get it even after the news director tells her to think of the TV newswomen she see's and if they dress like her, then what does she show up in, black patent leather open toed 4 inch platform stilettos and a tight lowcut dress, she has to be sent home to change.
She doesn't listen but the men congratulate her for not being a monumental fuck up, which pisses the plainer women off who don't get applauded at all for doing their jobs well.
They also use the "men will watch anything plastered in big tits and blonde hair" which I'm sure some men find insulting.
Plus, the show was never funny, not one giggle, it was groan worthy it was like watching one of those My Super Sweet Sixteen girls 6 years older trying to be a career woman.
Last but not least, the star was not likeable! You didn't have sympathy for her, you didn't root for her like people did for Reese's character in Legally Blonde. Instead of her being smart and professional, she was just a showcase of all that most of us americans are tired of seeing. Pretty, stupid people getting jobs and noterity with absolutly no skills or talent whatsoever.

Well
[Read the article: "The Nanny Diaries"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The Nannie Diaries was a much better book than The Devil Wears Prada. So I could see this movie being better than Prada.
But I'm still not seeing it in the theatre.
