  • A Softer Brand of Hatred

[Read the article: "It is impossible to miss the discrimination against ... believers"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There is one sure thing about Jerry Falwell: everybody knew exactly where he stood. Sure, he was xenophobic, homophobic, anti-feminist, anti-Semitic, and was afflicted with every form of "ism." But he didn't couch these sins in respectable language like Newt Gingrich and other newborn fundamentalists, which makes Gingrich a lot scarier than Jerry Falwell.

He uses Christian fundamentalism to take on Islamic fundamentalism, in the name of God and in the name of this country's founders, which really isn't any different than any religion that preaches and practices intolerance toward and hatred of others.

What I don't understand, though, is why more people don't just flat out confront him about the softer brand of hatred he preaches.

Fundamentalism is fundamentalism is fundamentalism, regardless of how nicely dressed-up it might be.

  • Finally, a voice of reason

[Read the article: Cindy Sheehan's wrong turn]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    I agree 100 percent!

Cindy Sheehan is a remarkable woman and has earned a place in history for her actions to bring rightful attention to the Shrub-Cheney war in Iraq. But she is just wrong to take aim at Nancy Pelosi who, by the way, also supports impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney. Pelosi is practical and knows the impeachment card will not work with such a divided Congress.

If Sheehan really wants to make a difference with her actions now, she needs to work within the anti-war movement and with the "silent" disenchanted Americans to put consistent, constant pressure on this administration -- actions she has proved work.

I remember when Richard Nixon reached out to the "silent majority" to gain additional time and support for an increasingly unpopular Vietnam War. Even though this group was just barely a majority, Nixon's tactic worked! Today, we have a large and growing majority of Americans who know the Iraq War was wrong and who realize how criminal this administration is. Sheehan could use her talents and skills to mobilize this angry majority -- in marches, letters to Congress and the White House, newspaper editorials -- and put constant, consistent pressure on those who really are our enemies.

It worked in Crawford because she persisted -- day in and day out -- and inspired others who did not know what to do or how to do it. That is how we will make change and history: small consistent actions, day in and day out!

  • To Be Or Not To Be...ANONYMOUS

[Read the article: Bill Clinton wants to know if you're having fun]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

People who post anonymously -- on any site -- are like people who whine and moan about our elected officials and our policies, but who don't bother to vote. If people are afraid of or don't believe in the opinions they share, why bother posting at all? It seems to me that anonymous posters are just going to get more flack, not so much for their opinions, but because they hide behind "anonymous." Anonymous also lets posters feel as if they can say anything, no matter how nasty, about other posters and/or posters' thoughts. This is not intelligent, adult discussion and does nothing to further understanding or solutions. I say, ban anonymous posts and do away with "Publish Anonymously".

  • Heeeeere's Patty!

[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Half the fun of watching "Damages" is wondering what Patty Hewes will do next. With Glenn Close at the helm, the quirky and risky nature of the overall plot line will test just how far viewers are willing to go. Will they become so disgusted with Hewes' malevolence (even if she is "fighting for the little guys"), that they will abandon ship early on, thus ending any hope for "Damages"? Or will they, like me, stay tuned to see the characters' layers slowly and deliciously peeled away to reveal just how they evolved (or devolved) into these "take no prisoners" personas? Inside every Patty Hewes is a turbulent, dark, brilliant, calculating, troubled-yet-remarkable story. That is the real plot line and promise of "Damages."

  • Hopefully not too late...

    [Read the article: "Broken Government"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I certainly never thought I would see the day when John Dean would utter these words about the Republican party, although if there was one man who came away from Watergate with a small shred of decency, it was John Dean.

I really appreciate hearing and reading these words from a Republican, and one who was part of the Nixon White House. It gives me hope that true patriots and people of any party who believe in this country's fundamental democratic values and principles can and will work to return our government to its rightful heirs -- the people.

And may we always remember the lies, perversions, greed, cynicism, cronyism, and utter disdain they have foisted upon us and allow no administration to do so again in our lifetimes.

  • MoveOn's Juvenile Behavior

[Read the article: Profiles in Democratic cowardice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

While I certainly don't think General Petraeus gave Congress any news we weren't already well-briefed and spun upon, I just have to ask: What in the world was MoveOn thinking when they came out with that ad? It's like a juvenile teenage name-calling prank that, frankly, I'd expect to see in, well, adolescents -- not from supposedly grown-up men and women who have (I would hope) more savvy, brains and talent than this ad implies. I was very disappointed that they couldn't or wouldn't find something a little more serious and biting than such inane words.

I don't agree with Petraeus either, nor do I agree with Republicans who continue to support George Bush in all of his lies and deception. As for the Democrats who stepped up to "denounce" the ad, what are their PR people doing except maybe scratching their heads and their b***s waiting for King George to do even more damage to our country.

Unlike you, Joan, I'm not sure it is a generational thing; I think it's just plain cowardice and politics of not wanting to hurt any potential voter's feelings...
