My family

"What happens if instead of 45% of people voting, we get 50%? That's a lot of people, and there's no way they registered to vote so they could support Bush's 3rd term"

Maybe not, but I know some are registering just for the chance to vote against Obama. I have aunts, uncles and cousins in rural Virginia and found out at a recent family event that several of them have registered to vote for the first time in their lives. These folks range in age from their 30s to 70s and while no issue in the past has made them get off their lazy rears to register, the fear of a black president has. They flat out say it with no hesitation.

This is just half a dozen folks in my family, but they cannot possibly be the only ones. I wish the Dems could claim most of a high turnout theirs, but I am terribly afraid it will not be so.

Babysteps

I am wondering exactly the same thing, about custody. If the LW can show him that she will not let him walk away and leave all of the responsibility of raising the kids to her, maybe he will snap out of any escape fantasy he may be having right now.

I wish letters like this could be read and discussed by all couples before they marry. I wonder how many people have loads of kids thinking nothing will ever go wrong? I'm a worst-case-scenario kind of gal, and thought "How many kids do I want to be responsible for if my hubby dies young, is incapacitated or leaves me?" My answer: one. So that is all I have had.

My favorite advice so far to the letter writer is to get the hubby to put off any divorce plans for a year, and to get him into counseling. I feel for the LW and hope for the best for her whole family.

Original article: Eight Belles' last run

Big difference

From the article: "Horses are fright-and-flight animals, instinctive runners who sometimes run themselves to death. It happens in the wild, and it happens on racetracks."

EXACTLY, which is why I'm opposed to horse racing! One is a wild animal running itself to death in fear for its life. The other is an animal at the mercy of humans being FORCED to run itself to death.

I remember watching the Derby as a child and being mortified that if a horse balked at going into the starting gate, it was pushed and dragged in. Then whipped to force it around the track. No one will ever convince me that this is something these animals enjoy doing.

Lets try lining them all up, with no starting gate and no riders, and just let them go and stand back. I'm not a gambler, but I'd be willing to bet money that they wouldn't just start racing each other on their own. My money would be on them finding the nearest patch of grass.

Original article: Killing the wolves again

Good thing I hate guns...

...because reading this article makes me want to go "Most Dangerous Game" on these idiots.

Bring back the fear

"But where is the incentive to save? The best rate a saver can get is a 9-month CD at 2 or 3%! If a bank and the nation so wants people to save money, will a savings rate of below 3% encourage savings?"

Fear of debt should be all the incentive one needs. Yes, making some interest on that savings would be nice, but is not required. My husband and I (38 and 37 yrs. old respectively) cannot be the only ones whose parents taught them that saving money for emergencies is a NEED, not a WANT. When you get paid, money gets set aside for savings before you pay for anything else. You should make a monthly budget of the money left over and live within it. It's not rocket science, and I have a very hard time feeling bad for folks who get hit with an unexpected development with *nothing* to fall back on. We drive two cars over ten years old, have a plain old 19-inch color tv, basic cable and hardly ever eat out. But we also have money in the bank in case we need it. That is the way my parents lived, and the way we will teach our son to live.

I agree with you completely. I just don't understand why anyone who supported HC could fail to support *the person she herself has endorsed*. If HC supporters trusted her enough to be the leader of the free world, why don't you trust her judgement that Obama should be our next president? Hillary Clinton gets it - we cannot have another four years of Republican rule. She says she will work hard to get Obama elected, and that is good enough for me. She understands the danger of losing the Supreme Court to conservatives for at least a generation. It makes me sick to my stomach to know that she has been so strong, even in defeat, but not all of her supporters will follow her example. She must be so disappointed in them.

So, KateTex

Would you prefer John McCain to choose the next couple of Supreme Court justices?
