  • Justice

[Read the article: Democrats bear responsibility for restoring habeas corpus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Paul Craig Roberts has been saying for years that there is no justice unless there is a trial. He indicates that any plea bargains at all destroy the idea of justice where the open court and the jury decide guilt or innocence.

If he is correct; we have no justice at all since 98% (or so) of all cases are decided in the "back room" by government officials.

Glenn, how do you see this?

  • The Press

[Read the article: PBS's "Frontline: Spying on the Home Front"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"... Thanks to a blindly compliant Congress and a tragically anemic press ..."

It has ever been thus, but now it is much worse than in past days. The "press" wants to see a maximum leader who controls all the people. The fools in the MSM seem to think heaven on earth lies in that direction. I think that direction leads to hell in a hand-basket.

The congress has just grown almost useless. Shall we elect horses to congress next?

  • The money quote

[Read the article: What Fred Thompson means by the "rule of law"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"... This is, after all, the same movement that itself still pays homage to The Rule of Law (and limited federal power) while defending the Leader as he lays claims to the power to break the law. ..."

Yes Glenn, that is the problem. The Republican Party talks a good game but it is all propaganda. They literally hate the rule of law. They prefer a King; their King, of course.

  • But who ever pays?

[Read the article: Gonzales' yearlong effort to block Comey's testimony]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"... As always, the contempt which the Bush administration has for the rule of law is illustrated not only by their serial and conscious lawbreaking ..."

But who ever pays for these crimes? I think I will never live to see even a low level Bush criminal face justice, much less see the real culprits brought to justice.

How long can we tolerate these crimes and remain free?

  • @kovie

[Read the article: Gonzales' yearlong effort to block Comey's testimony]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Umm...Scooter Libby, that's who. Duke Cunningham, that's who. Bob Ney, that's who. Jack Abramoff, that's who. Want more? How about Tom DeLay, John Doolittle, Rick Renzi, Conrad Burns, Rick Santorum, Monica Goodling, Paul McNulty, Donald Rumsfeld, etc.--each of whom has either faced legal investigation, indictment and/or a loss of reputation, power and position, as a result of being a part of the vast right-wing corruption conspiracy. ..."

Scooter is not yet in jail. Nor do I expect him to ever serve a day; yet I hope he will.

The others are not Bush administration officials who have been found guilty and are in sitting in jail. The troubles of all on the list are self inflicted or will be attributed to "mere politics" by the majority. "What scandals" will be the Republican cry --- "the Abramoff thing was in congress" will scream Limbaugh and the rest.

No, we have no one paying yet. I want jail time for the traitors who are destroying our freedoms via illegal spying, torture, and all the rest. (plus impeachment of course)

"Are you suggesting that voters believe the GOP when it says that there were no scandals? Then why did they vote them out of office last fall--Democratic voter fraud? ... You're setting the bar too high, too soon. Justice doesn't work as quickly as you seem to want it to ...We are on the brink of a new progressive era in the US ..."

I am suggesting that the Republican base will believe that it was all just politics, just as they believe that Nixon did not do anything that "everyone else has done". I live in a sea of Republican culture and can guarentee to you that the Republican base does not see overwhelming Bush Republican corruption and lawlessness like you and I do.

I further believe that the moderates in the country will not see the Bush Administration lawlessness and corruption as anything unique unless there are convictions. Perhaps not even then; after all, the Bushies will always claim they were just doing what had to be done to protect America.

We need a Republican Federal Court System and a Republican justice system to charge and convict Republican criminals in high and powerful places. Good luck with that. (look at the numbers in the court system appointed by Republicans)

We are not on the brink of a new progressive era. That is wishful thinking at a minimum and more likely self-delusion. The most we can hope for in the near term is a move away from the authoritarian right.

Sigh. I do wish you were correct. Time will tell which of us was more on target this day.

    "... But I do have a problem with knee-jerk cynical pronouncements ..."

Then stop making so many of them.

Your words are those of the classic wild-eyed lefty --- a cliche. You assume that because I am anti-Bush that I think that Democrats are the answer. As a libertarian, I find your kind to be potentially just as dangerous. The left is less dangerous at the moment only because they are out of power for now.

Both sides want to dominate and control --- you only differ on who should hold the whip. (or bombs)

  • Projection

[Read the article: BloggingheadsTV session with the Politico's Ben Smith]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Glenn, I just realized after reading your latest post how much the right-wing uses projection as a weapon to disarm criticism. They shout and scream that the press is most unfair and is *very liberal* even as all evidence points the opposite way. It seems as if the motif is to accuse your opponent of whatever you intend to pull yourself --- that way he is at a disadvantage.

  • Impeachment *is* the only thing....

[Read the article: What will be done about James Comey's revelations?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"I know we would all like to see Bush impeached, removed from office and barred from employment with the Federal government ever again. ..."

It is not just that I would like to see Bush impeached. It is a message must be sent to all who follow that these criminal acts are not to be allowed in our society. If he makes it to the end of his Presidency, we set a president that everything he did is tolerable.

When will we stop and just say no? If not now, when?
