Ted Turner Brought Down the Soviet Union
[Read the article: Did Reagan win the Cold War?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It was information that brought down the Soviet Union not Ronald Regean. The great capitalist Ted Turner while trying to make a buck brought it down. I don't even think it was news that did it but the commercials. The commercials begging people to buy products that their system could not deliver to the public.

Threats in Spanish
[Read the article: The GOP's dirty deeds of 2006]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I went up to Colorado and worked the last five days before the election in the Colorado 4th. In a 62% Bush district in 2004 we lost only by 3% by the grace of a Reform candidate who garnered 11% of the vote Angie Paconi lost the election. This was after an appearance by our fearless leader (Bush) at a half filled invitation only rally in the Republican stronghold of Greeley.
I worked a get out the vote phone bank on Election Day. While making these calls we got continuing reports of Spanish language phone calls threatening Democratic and Independent voters with criminal investigation of their and other members of their household status and possible deportation if they voted. Because this district is 40% Republican and the balance split evenly between Democrats and Independents you have to wonder about the 6,000 vote difference in the final result and if this district would have been Democratic for the first time since 1972.

Please...
[Read the article: The virtual John Kerry]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I gave some money to John Kerry last time only because of what he was running against. I will not make such a bad investment again... So John don't run... infact why don't you get out of the Senate.

National Guard in Texas in the Sixties
[Read the article: Dan Rather stands by his story]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]First let me just say as a man who grew up in Austin, Texas in the late sixties I can tell you that the spots in the Texas National Guard were coveted. I can tell you Ben Barnes was a very powerful person and could get you in. I can also tell you that the conservatives in the Texas Democratic Party of which Ben Barnes was closely allied were going to back the father George H.W. Bush if Ralph Yarbrough defeated Lloyd Benson in the Democratic primary in 1969. Most of those Democrats including the likes of Phil Graham and current governor Rick Perry have turned to Republicans. I can tell you there was no way in hell you could get into that unit of the National Guard without a connection. I know because my dad offered to get me into the Guard using the influence of the former ambassador to Australia and LBJ confidante Ed Clark if I did not get my student deferment. I promise you that anyone who believes Bush’s story about how he got in to the Guard is clueless.
As for the documents, I have wondered about them. I heard the guy who provided them was unsure about their authenticity and had expressed concern about them when he gave them to CBS. I have wondered if Karl Rove produced them on his own word processor and got them into the hands of someone they knew would get them in hands of someone who would release them. Once that was done they tipped off the conservative bogglers about the forgeries. They would be shot down and the truth about Bush’s draft dodging would be taken care of forever. Funny how it works out.

If I was a Republican
[Read the article: A mixed message for Rudy from the Christian right]
[Read more letters about this article: Here].. I think I would have to go with Huckabee or Paul. While I disagree with Huckabee on many issues he is a man of faith and principal. I really hope we get to go against Guiliani because his flip flopping on issues will make him easy pickins.

The Texas Two Step
[Read the article: No Texas-size victory for Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]From deep in the heart of Texas, I see a lot of positives for November. Last night I went out to caucus for Obama and at 7PM when the polls were supposed to close there were three hundred people standing in the parking lot outside the apartment club house that was our polling place. There was no way we were going to fit into that place but it did not matter because by the time the last voter voted and the votes were counted it was 8PM. We went and found the precinct captains for the Hillary folks and organized our sign in procedure. We let the 10 Republicans have their convention in the club house and we organized our sign in for the caucus in the adjoining Laundromat. Some of the Hillary folks were apprehensive about us because we out numbered them 2 to 1 but I assured them we would count all the votes because after all we are not Republicans. By nine we ran all the folks through the line we and we had 146 for Obama and 72 for Clinton. My counter part at the sign in table and I agreed in September we would get back together and knock on every door in the precinct no matter who wins. We know if we can get all the increase the Democratic turnout by the same percentage in November we can turn a Red Texas Blue.
