  • Being Rational Is A Good Thing?

[Read the article: No, really, this is the Quote of the Day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The Democrats tried the rational card in 2002 and 2004. Look what happened to them.

If you want the Democrats to -- again -- lose in 2006 and 2008, by all means, advocate the "rational" card.

The John Cornyn that some of you praise for being rational (self-serving is more accurate) over the immigration issue is also the John Cornyn who, yesterday, derided the Democrats for their plan to capture Bin Laden... Never mind that the fact that Bin Laden is still at large is the fault of a Republican administration. How is that for rational?

The Republicans will stop at nothing to stay in power. Honesty, rationality, civility, and personal responsibility, are not part of their political make-up or strategy. And the public obviously laps it all up.

It is high time that Democrats fight the Republicans with their own weapons. If that means rolling in the muck with their opponents, so be it. The end justifies the emans. The goal is to throw the Rrepublicans out of office. Once the Democrats are back in power, they can revert to rationality.

  • The Britney Sculpture

[Read the article: A (very) little more on the "pro-life" Britney sculpture]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Whatever happened to the law of gravity? Are babies supposed to drop DOWN on their head nowadays?

The sculpture is tasteless and repulsive. But never mind. That the right-to-lifers embrace that piece of slightly pornographic junk is indicative of their level of intellectual and aesthetic sophistication. They'll embrace trash as long as it suits their purposes.

  • Napoli

[Read the article: An abortion cartoon that's actually funny]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Napoli deserves all the abuse he is getting.

I had to take a shower after I read Napoli's comment about allowing an exception to the abortion ban in the case of rape. Note that the douche bag never said a word about exceptions for incest victims.

His comments sounded like the sick, depraved, fantasies of a rapist. He gave it a lot of thought, all right; the scumbag has been salivating about it for years.

I hope the SD police is looking at him for unsolved rape cases. They should also check him for signs of molesting his children.

    Blast the scumbag! I did!

  • Immigration Demagogues

    [Read the article: Immigration demagogues]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The "debate" about immigration shows yet again that the Republicans -- particularly the House Republicans -- are fundamentally mean-spirited and racist. And, yet again, they are appealing to people basest instincts to get votes. They are also abysmally stupid, however, as they do not realize that they are driving Hispanic voters away.

To hear those clowns in the House huffing and puffing about illegal immigration, you would think that 12 millions of undocumented aliens showed up in the U.S. just last week, and are suddenly a giant cost on society. That is so absurd.

In new York, immigrants from south of the border hold the dirtiest, lowest-paying, jobs. They work in restaurant kitchens, they bus tables, they deliver groceries and take-out food, they clean houses, they work as janitors, they pick fruits in vegetables in the farms of Long Island and upstate New York... They do not ask for anything. They just work to feed thair families.

They are not a drain on our resources. As someone mentioned on this blog, most immigrants do not dare use our health and social services for fear that they would be recognized as illegals and deported. Some of them pay taxes, some do not. What they all do, however, is spend their money on consumer goods, i.e., they contribute to the growth of the economy (consumption expenditures are 2/3 of GDP).

The only solution is to integrate illegal immigrants into our society by legalizing them. A "guest-worker" program is doomed for failure. Just look at the European experience. The Europeans have mangaed to create a permanent underclass that is disinfranchised therefore restless and susceptible to extremist elements.

"The illegals in this country must be rounded up and sent packing. How can we require our own citizens to adhere to the rule of law when you grant amnesty to the illegals?"

You are confusing civil offense (entering the country illegally) with criminal offense. Here in New York City -- as in the country at large -- most of those guilty of the civilan offense of being illegal work their asses off in low-paying jobs, are thankful for those low-paying jobs, do not complain, do not try to use our hospitals and clinics, and do not apply for food stamps or other benefits available to low-income people. Out of fear of being deported. Moreover, they have better family values, as family is all important to them. Finally, they DO spend money in the LEGAL (as opposed to underground) economy as the food, furniture, appliances, clothes, etc... that they buy are not beamed from out of space, but come from bona fide stores. Their employers are quite happy to have this source of cheap labor: they do not have to pay SS taxes for it. So, who's cheating whom here?

We do, however, have an abundance of American citizens who are unemployed, unskilled, unwilling to better themselves, and too lazy and self-indulgent to work at dirty, low-paying jobs. They are the real drain on our resources. They are the ones who show up in our emergency rooms and in our welfare offices, clamoring for aid that they believe is their due as American citizens.

Most of the drug dealers, robbers, murderers, rapists, child molesters, and assorted deviants, that we have to deal with in this society are American citizens... So, labelling illegal immigrants as "criminals" is simply idiotic.

Were you not so blinded by irrational hatred, crass ignorance of economics, racism, and xenophobia, you might actually see that immigrants -- whether they have the stamp of approval from some lowly bureaucrat in some U.S. consulate somewhere in the world or not -- actually contribute to keeping this country energetic.

Just in case you forgot, this country was founded by immigrants, and its dynamism is the result of successive waves of immigrants who came to our shores to better their lives and that of their children through hard work and belief of a better life. Mexican and other immigrants are no different.
