A program of tax credits or even government checks to parents which allows for choice could turn around our horrible educational system.

However, teaching long ago became a jobs program in places like Hartford, Newark. Washington and Chicago's South Side. Many of these "teachers" get ahead by taking "education" courses. They never come close to mastering the subjects they are supposed to teach. Their union protects them from the occasional demanding principal and from the parents who want them to actually teach.

Yet, the realities of power dictate that Obama must support these chronic clock punchers who routinely call in sick and can not teach English for an hour without 40 grammatical errors during class.
