Bush brings up privatizing Social Security, a sure loser. But this allows Congressional candidates to disagree with him and put beneficial distance between them and Bush. Example: The GOP candidate in NYS 24th is a Conservative, but he opposes privitazation.
I know Bush & Co are often delusional, but Rove has to know their hopes for SS ain't gonna happen. Why not use it to help House & Senate candidates?
You define luck as the home run that just clears the fence and the single that just eludes the infielder. But over a season, those factors even out. That kind of luck only applies to a single game or series. You didn't mention the only real way luck affects a season - injury.
is Woodward's Mulligan.
I haven't missed a Krugman or Rich column since TimseSelect began, but I don't subscribe. They are always easily available through a Technorati serach of blogs..

I have though exactly the same for some time now.
Democratic and Labor strategies to reach Blue Collar workers succeeded in PA in 2004, and should again.
The McGovern analogy is strained. My fear of history repeating is the GOP's ability and the press' cooperation in painting the Democrat as an odd ball,unAmerican, weak, etc. You all know the routine. This is what we must fight.
So Obama has to accede to some Hillary demand or she will continue tearing him down. What would she gain from doing that? She would further destroy any chance she might have to be President should Obama lose.Do not underestimate how many Democrats she has alienated. I also think the campaign debt issue is bogus. Mr & Mrs can easily raise or make money to pay off the debt. What's best for her is to continue campaigning positively if she wishes and call it quits when the string is out (next month.)
Clinton supporters get upset about things said by OBAMA SUPPORTERS, while Obama supporters get upset by things THE CLINTONS say. Obama has done nothing to offend women. He stands just as firmly on issues perceived as important to women as Sen. Clinton does. This race was not about whether a black man or a white woman would win. It is about the course of the nation. Obviously, there is more than symbolic importance in the racial or gender identity of the candidate. But right now, it is secondary to ousting the troglodytes.
I'm no longer a fan of Salon. Joan is clueless. How does she not see McCain's actions for what they are: paint Obama as an uppity nigger who is after young slutty white women. It's as simple as that. Right out of the Rove textbook. Joan, you should be in full-throated outrage over this tactic. Josh Marshall gets it, Joan. You don't.
The big hole in your thesis is that Obama was losing white liberal Democrats when his approval hit its low point. Look at Gallup and Zogby crosstab info.
Of course race is a big factor in how the GOP and right are attacking Obama. But your piece fails to note that part of Obama's most recent drop in approval came from Democrats like me and many Salon readers who are unhappy with his policies. See http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.cfm?ID=1737 and Gallup.
