I wouldn't have read the article if it weren't for the Internets. It probably wouldn't have been published if it weren't for the Internets.
Unless the next generation's eyeballs grow differenly, or their brains develop new clumps of brain, I don't think that we're in danger of any physical evolution.
Journalism, however, has evolved. It's become a mess of stream-of-conscious nonsense, with no attention whatsoever to the pyramid format, and attention to the who, what, when, where, and why presented in an order where the important information can be parsed out in less than 40 minutes.
In other words, thanks to the Internets, we people have taken over journalism's bizarrely self-appointed role of being the "final arbiter" of deciding what it is that we need to know. There's a form of social evolution that I applaud!
Great article. The Republican Party is rejoicing in it's racist and apparently permanent legacy, since we Democrats aren't going to take back the folks who flocked to the dark side during the 70's and 80's.
Out of touch, arrogant, in denial, stupid, silly, racist, elitist, and low population parts of America, are the words that come to mind.
There are too many shows about "relationships" with too many privileged White people writing, acting, and deciding what we want to watch. If I hear one more helium voiced actress shrilling about her "relationship", I will scream. This has been going on for a decade. At least lose the annoying word: "relationship"!
Thanks for expressing my understanding of Jay Leno. He's the worst interviewer in television history.
Upper Cable, the CSI series, including the cartoon like "CSI Miami", where sharks get jumped every week, and movies are my television fare. I find very little worth watching on the major networks. Even PBS has sunk to a new low.
"Crash" on STARZ, is a fine, limited run series. Dennis Hopper is a gem.
Every day it's like waking up from a nightmare, looking at the clock, and finding out that it's only Midnight!
It wont be soon enough to see this nasty, stupid waste of human flesh and his vapid wife out of the White House and under the unrelenting scrutiny of history and the people he betrayed.
Have we learned the price of complacency yet?
American interests in this matter have not been allowed as a topic...because, with the exception of religious dogmatic beliefs, there aren't any American interests in such one sided support for Israel.
There are other reasons. And given Israel's oppressive misconduct, we can't afford to blindly support the regime there, any more.
I can only hope that more of us realize that it's not an "Arab v Jew v Christian problem". The situation is far more complicated than that.
It's about oppression v uprising. And we are more than savvy at making a situation complicated in order to keep things the way that they are. We'll complicate the hell out of it in order to avoid admitting that we aid and abet oppression by people who whine daily about past oppression that they suffered.
"For once, a look at the world through an Israeli perspective, right here on Salon! I'm proud of you, Joan."
You just don't get it, and apparently never will. Now, Israel has used up its 9 lives of oppression, blockading, harassing, and lying about it.
We're beginning to hear from the other side in the issue. And it looks awful.
Bottom line. Killing innocent civilians is not an option. Oppression, harassment, blockading, extorting land from farmers, and preventing normal commerce does NOT constitute a "cease fire". The fact that you could have prevented Hamas from gaining a foothold in the first place, and that you didn't use the insane levels of money that you take from us to prevent Hamas rise in power, is telling on you.
You are losing support every day, and you still don't get it. This stubborn, arrogant, violent, dishonest and infuriating behavior comes with a cost.
In another forum, someone complained about Gupta's allegedly crass response to a woman who wanted a face transplant. He essentially said that if she can breathe and eat well, it's best to leave it alone.
The fact is, as with any other transplants, the equivalent of AIDS has to be induced, via immune system suppression, in order to help prevent rejection of the tissue. This is a serious problem that makes such transplants not quite ready for prime time. He was saying what the vast majority of doctors are telling their patients who have catastrophic facial damage: the cure can be worse than the disorder.
Otherwise, he's been a practicing neurosurgeon, he's photogenic, articulate, brave and appealing.
Since when has the Surgeon General been viewed by most of us as anything but a public sales rep for good health and for educating us about public health issues?
Bit of trivia: The Surgeon General is actually a General. Surgeon and Attorney Generals are not addressed as "Sir" or Doctor. They are addressed as "General...". And Generals are allowed to design their own uniforms. Hmmm...
Dr. Gupta has great experience in summarizing and presenting complex medical information to the masses, and will be an excellent Surgeon General.
