Proposed Easy Remedy

Did I miss something? Or am I just dense?

The question is whether the fMRI results demonstrated in the experiment are indicative of consciousness, right? The authors counter view is that the results may just be automatic neurological responses to stimuli.

Well, why not perform the same experiment on someone you know is unconscious? Say someone in induced sleep or coma. If the same results occur in the participant you know to be unconscious, then the premise that those results are indicative of consciuosness is negated.
