I've been trying to write up an entry about Moyers and all this but my current situation makes it nigh impossible for me to do that, so I'll try to dash off some of it here:
During the Nixon administration Moyers was put on Nixon's enemies list for doing what journalists are supposed to do: perform a watchdog service for the public by questioning authority and making sure they're honest.
It was at this time that the conservative movement came up with it's wedge strategy of attacking the media for a "liberal bias" (this is documented in Brock's Republican Noise Machine). Moyers became the symbol of the hated "liberal bias" and its why he's been targeted ever since. He has become an Eternal Enemy of the movement. And of course, the movement's Eternal Enemy is synonymous with "far left liberal/socialist/communist".
And now they're starting to circulate this meme that Moyers is part of the nefarious George Soros conspiracy to convert America to a "S-P" nation.
Over at this post at Orcinus
http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2007/04/not-just-for-theaters.html
where Mr. Neiwert documents the anti-"liberal" hate-mongers using the Va TEch shooting to demonize "liberals" he writes:
Outsize, absurd, nonsensical and illogical metaphors are the hallmark of right-wing projection in action. Which leaves us only to deduce that, once again, the eliminationists are busy hankering for liberals' elimination and wishing they could be taken out by a brave and heroic John Derbyshire (as Bruce Willis). Not that anything resembling real action is likely to emerge from this pathetic pack of fantasists, trapped in their own little Bizarro Universe. The problem, as always, is the poor kook they manage to eventually work up into another fine murderous froth. And then they'll find a way to blame it, as always, on liberals. Works every time.
In the comments there I noted
I'm an advocate of using "..." around liberal when used by the hate-mongers cited in this post. "Liberal" = Eternal Enemy. It doesn't have anything to do with political liberalism or any such thing.
Seriously, that O'Reilly Soros thing ... what is the difference ... the significant difference between that and anti-Semites in the 20s and 30s blaming all America's problems on Jews. Is it different because he calls Soros an "s-p"
I bet the paleofascists at Stormfront managed to notice that Soros is of Jewish descent.
Oh, and last night O'Reilly added Bill Moyers to his enemies list. Apparently Bill Moyers is another minion of the nefarious international S-P George Soros.

Basically the same thing I just said here.
Another commenter pointed out that Moyers is Baptist seminary graduate and former preacher. But just like in the days of old, if you don't bow to the teaching of the Authority, be it Bush or O'Reilly or Limbaugh, you are an infidel and a treasonous traitor.
Glenn mentions Goldberg demonizing Scott Ritter before the invasion. THat's what this movement traffics in: demonological scapegoating. One of their chief targets is Jimmy Carter. According to terrorist apologist D'Nesh D'Souza Carter is to blame for 9/11 (along with decadent liberals) and Glenn just the other day mentioned Melanie Phillips saying Carter is a servant of the Islmofascists.
Here's what Carter had to say about the invasion of Iraq
http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0309-02.htm I'm quoting from the last section.
The peace it establishes must be a clear improvement over what exists. Although there are visions of peace and democracy in Iraq, it is quite possible that the aftermath of a military invasion will destabilize the region and prompt terrorists to further jeopardize our security at home. Also, by defying overwhelming world opposition, the United States will undermine the United Nations as a viable institution for world peace. What about America's world standing if we don't go to war after such a great deployment of military forces in the region? The heartfelt sympathy and friendship offered to America after the 9/11 attacks, even from formerly antagonistic regimes, has been largely dissipated; increasingly unilateral and domineering policies have brought international trust in our country to its lowest level in memory. American stature will surely decline further if we launch a war in clear defiance of the United Nations. But to use the presence and threat of our military power to force Iraq's compliance with all United Nations resolutions — with war as a final option — will enhance our status as a champion of peace and justice.
This is what the movement has done to this country. It has turned insane lunatics like Mike Ledeen into the voice of our foreign policy while ritually defaming people like Jimmy Carter. Oh, and for the record, with the exception of Eisenhower, Carter spent more years of active service in the armed forces than any president since the Civil War. And his son, Jack Carter, voluntarily left college to serve in Vietnam.
I think its time to start tearing down this fantasy world that the conservative movement's Ministry of Truth (the noise machine) has worked at so hard at building.

Both were on the take. I suspect that if a full investigation were to be done of this administration other such corruptions would be found. I'm betting that there are more small scale instances of Jeff Gannon's out there, too. Gannon got caught because they were brazen enough to let that hack into WH press briefings.
And I strongly suspect that it would be wise for someone to do a full review of Bush's use of Executive Orders. It's absolutely naive to think that he hasn't abused those the same way he's abused Signing Statements. I already know of a couple of examples of him using EOs to overturn or create laws where none exists ... Dean lists one example of Bush doing so in Worse than Watergate and I've got several books on Bush's environmental assault that document similar instances.
