some of the IKEA beds are ok

I have a Sultan Flataker hard foam mattress on a Malm bed. The hard foam doesn't develop a hollow like cheap spring mattresses or futons do.

No it isn't the cheapest bed they have...but I wouldn't buy the cheapest thing that anybody sold.

The idea that shopping at IKEA is a "Kafkaesque nightmare" is fairly ridiculous. What a drama queen!

maybe she really doesn't have a problem

I tried AA for awhile but my problem was actually depression, not drinking. Of course the people in AA didn't see it that way.

Now I drink occasionally and it never turns into anything bad. However one might say that I'm just addicted to my meds instead of alcohol.

My point is that your girlfriend is making her choices, she seems to be doing ok, and AA is no longer part of her reality except for YOU and your judgements.

I sleep strong in cheap bed to work hard in field next day. Da!

I slept on the floor for many years

not a mattress on the floor...just on the floor. Actually on a bedspread. It was really good for my back.

I prefer the floor...but most momen don't seem to want to have sex on the floor, for some reason. Luckily they all have their own beds these days.

Ikea needs to start selling the SEX Collection...this is the minimum furniture configuration you need to get laid.

@UT

The prison population is already disproportionately black:

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/prisons.htm

Is that solving the problem?

The first rule of statistics is that correlation is not causation. That is, being black correlates more strongly with committing rape than being white. But these people don't rape because they are black...they rape because they are low SES (socioeconomic status).

If you want proof, look up the statistics for ONLY middle class blacks and whites.

"I happen to think Fox News is a legitimate news source."

this decreases the viability of the rest of your arguments.

Friday, October 23, 2009 05:17 PM

teleologicus

Over and over again supporters of Mr. Obama repeat the mantra that people like me who do disagree with Mr. Obama, and who find Fox News to be a perfectly fine news outlet, in fact the best available today, are stupid, ignorant, liars, racists, haters, dupes, dopes, tools of big business, etc etc etc.

It's not a mantra...it's an opinion. Why are you trying to characterize it as something else?

Friday, October 23, 2009 05:45 PM

"I merely wish I knew how to account for it all."

Of course, as one of the rabble you are aren't addressing me...so obviously I'm speaking to anyone else who might be reading.

People have different value systems. For example, pro-choice people value the mother's rights, while pro-life people value the rights of the fetus.

The formation of values in an individual probably lies within the fields of biology and psychology, not political science. The idea that political ideas are part of the development of an individual would explain why they are so difficult to change.

To look at what is "right" outside the individual's values is to presume some sort of universal playbook for human activity...and are we all supposed to adopt the one used by Fox News, just to simplify things?

Regarding Palin, anyone who's even slightly objective can see that she's well on her way to becoming a rather short Wikipedia entry.

I had a friend in high school who was raped

For a long time I thought about it...the thing to realize is that it's about YOU, not her. She's come to her own conclusions already.

I would really suggest finding a therapist, and not bringing it up with your wife at all.

The closest common victim situation for men is being harassed by bullies in school.

Actually, the closest common victim situation for men is being assaulted or murdered:

frat boys

when I was in college I was a border in a frat house. This particular frat was not very popular, so they had extra rooms for rent.

On weekends, they had parties and so they moved mattresses into the basement to form a sort of sexual rumpus room.

Eventually these guys asked me to rush, but I always made up some excuse...like I was going to drop out of college and go live with my uncle. I moved out after a few months and got an apartment.

I can't imagine these dudes are much better at 50...but maybe Heather Havrilesky knows a side of frat boys that I never experienced.
