The question of whether most people are primarily moral and intelligent (like the UT regulars), or primarily petty and stupid (like the UT interlopers), is certainly an open one.

If "idealism" is the fundamental force behind a writer, it is unlikely that an appeal to utility will have any persuasive merit, no matter how well-argued.

My position is that most people are not moralizing idealists, and are instead somewhat amoral pragmatists.

Of course when you live someplace you often don't notice all the pretty stuff. I usually only ride my bike to work but there are about a million other places to ride here.
