Original article: Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

"resisting the impulse to respond to each Earnest, if primitive and supercilious, insistence that the award is a Good Thing."

Someone has suggested that Obama will use the Nobel as a weapon against his progressive critics...however there is no evidence that this is needed.

Original article: Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

"If anyone thinks the world is more dangerous today than it was a year ago, they're not paying attention."

sslash, that's really what it boils down to.

I spent some time in Sweden when I was younger

The social services system is more advanced of course...but people seemed to drink an awful lot, even compared to the US.

Stating that someone "stands with the terrorists" is simply an opinion

Since when does an opinion force someone to bow to Obama? It certainly doesn't force YOU.

Saturday, October 10, 2009 10:55 AM

I am simply accepting this particular news item about Obama

at face value...all the spin and caveats are just part of the background noise.

something stinks it isn't just about being black

it's about being the first black President...in the context of our nation's history that is a huge step.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 10:19 AM

as somebody has said, the threat of the draft is what stopped the Vietnam war

The military has since wisely moved to a volunteer force and a network of high-level insiders to keeps the wars going.

One can protest all day on the net...but without the draft there is no link between the "man on the street" and the man with the progressive political theory.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 02:02 PM

this is a lot more like an ad than "news"

not that there's anything wrong with ads...I love those pop-ups that take over the whole screen.

"Stupid petty tribalism"

The question of whether most people are primarily moral and intelligent (like the UT regulars), or primarily petty and stupid (like the UT interlopers), is certainly an open one.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 12:34 PM

Susan Wood

Many of the writers here see an opposing viewpoint simply as a case study in inferior thinking...and in keeping with leftist and libertarian philosophy, inferior thinkers deserve to be insulted.

Ms. or Mrs. McLachlan

1) GG needs no commentary from me, seeing that this is his blog and he is always right by definition

2) again, someone is deemed unworthy...and to defend them is...inconceivable

"Shit or get off the pot."

I would take Obama and his centrist piss-ant torture state over any of history's "true believers", any day.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 01:54 PM

Holly M. says don't whine

thanks for the tip...however I no longer want to invest any time in constructing pre-discredited opposing arguments regarding various policy scenarios.

If "idealism" is the fundamental force behind a writer, it is unlikely that an appeal to utility will have any persuasive merit, no matter how well-argued.

My position is that most people are not moralizing idealists, and are instead somewhat amoral pragmatists.

So naturally our elected representatives reflect this.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 08:34 PM

why does Obama feel the need to hang onto the dungeons and leg irons in his presidential toolkit?

"national security"

ownership is Valhalla for the right

yet like many of us, Rush only seems to own his big fat mouth.

Friday, October 16, 2009 04:22 PM

"This is basic freshman biology."

A single mutation leading to better insecticide resistance may be "freshman biology". An unbroken chain of non-sterile individuals, over thousands of years, leading from one species to another, is not.

Friday, October 16, 2009 04:31 PM

it's time for the truth

Midi-chlorians were intelligent microscopic life forms that lived symbiotically inside the cells of all living things. When present in sufficient numbers, they could allow their symbiont to detect the pervasive energy field known as the Force. Midi-chlorian counts were linked to potential in the Force, ranging from normal Human levels of 2,500 per cell to the much higher levels of Jedi. The highest known midi-chlorian count belonged to the Jedi Anakin Skywalker (over 20,000 per cell), who was believed to have been conceived by the midi-chlorians.

never seen that before

Friday, October 16, 2009 05:07 PM

my mom used to read this to us

I have no desire to see the film.

teresa I live in Portland

and there are three of me at work...it's confusing

Friday, October 16, 2009 08:04 PM

I have a friend who lives in Tacoma...Seattle seems so big compared to Portland

Och jag är bara 173 cm lång, tyvärr!

Friday, October 16, 2009 08:24 PM

Rush and the NFL

He loves them but they don't love him...ouch.

Friday, October 16, 2009 08:31 PM

it's warmed up and windy so it's going to rain a lot

if you're coming this way

Friday, October 16, 2009 08:53 PM

teresa

Of course when you live someplace you often don't notice all the pretty stuff. I usually only ride my bike to work but there are about a million other places to ride here.

Speaking of pretty places, I went to Seattle a couple of years ago and took the ferry out to Vashon Island. That was really nice.

I've never been to Chicago...I'm only familiar with the Civil War prison camp with that name.

Luckily in our Civil War on these pages, there are no prison camps...

Friday, October 16, 2009 09:17 PM

teresa I had heard that Vashon used to be hippyland

pt. defiance sounds familiar...we must have gone that way.

We visited friends who had a house there, friends of his parents, something like that. I live in a small apartment downtown so I'm always impressed by homeowners in trendy places like islands.

Friday, October 16, 2009 09:45 PM

sure the bastard is popular...but will he last?

heroes like the bastard ultimately fail, not because they lose arguments but because the trolls eventually wear them down.

The bastard is loud and vulgar, but he has a brain. The trolls have no brains at all...and this is their great strength.

Friday, October 16, 2009 09:56 PM

dwg

the trolls want to "score points" with a "zinger". But like you say they don't really believe what they're saying. That would require some basic understanding of both sides of the issue.

Friday, October 16, 2009 09:59 PM

teresa

perhaps the bastard will mellow into some sort of elder statesman around here...although I think Fester currently has that title.

Friday, October 16, 2009 10:07 PM

JINX!

Saturday, October 17, 2009 11:26 AM

mr pupen

There is no sense of outrage at the top.

That really isn't surprising, since "the top" is in this case part of the problem.

Saturday, October 17, 2009 01:12 PM

"The blowback will be with a flame-thrower."

or maybe with a weed-whacker...or a leaf blower, or perhaps a wagner powerpainter.

During a commercial break.

Sunday, October 18, 2009 09:10 AM

these "lone wolves" who are "alienated" from their own marriages

put em in a studio apartment for a week alone, and they're going nuts...putzes.

Sunday, October 18, 2009 11:30 AM

nazis are the gold standard for meanies

we certainly look like nazis to them

Sunday, October 18, 2009 02:13 PM

"It'll be just a little til Israel is about as popular as apartheid South Africa."

Yeah...and the end of apartheid really improved things in Africa as a whole.

Sunday, October 18, 2009 02:44 PM

"So ending apartheid wasn't worth the fight because South Africa didn't become, overnight, a Garden of Delights?"

Africa, like the Middle East, has a lot of problems. I would suggest that the Palestinian question, like apartheid, has been over-emphasized by the American left...particularly among those who are obsessed with constitutional issues.

Sunday, October 18, 2009 03:05 PM

"...the only pieces of paper between us and tyranny."

but apparently not between us and tyranny over others.

Sunday, October 18, 2009 07:53 PM

I think that members of the US government operate under the principle of "might makes right"

so you really can't say that they're unprincipled.

Sunday, October 18, 2009 08:23 PM

you might have agitated depression

don't take my word for it...look it up on wikipedia.
