Original article: Obama woos LGBT leaders

@Ashgrove

Gay teens have a high rate of attempted suicides. Native American teens have a high rate of actual suicides.

There is very little data on the rate of completed gay teen suicides. The research by Paul Gibson is frequently quoted by activists:

In 1989, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued its "Report on the Secretary's Task Force on Youth Suicide," which found that "A majority of suicide attempts by homosexuals occur during their youth, and gay youth are 2 to 3 times more likely to attempt suicide than other young people. They may comprise up to 30 percent of (the estimated 5,000) completed youth suicides annually. (italics mine)

http://www.outproud.org/article_suicide.html

Gibson's methodology has been questioned, and there are currently no nationally recognized rates for gay teen suicide (unlike Native American teen suicide, which is broken out as a category by the CDC).

Original article: Gay men go to hell

"Most of these people give more thought to what they put on this morning then why they have a problem with homosexuality."

As a very shy straight college student in Los Angeles during the early 80s, it always seemed like men were checking me out, and women weren't...I found this frustrating.

So I suppose that's why I have an aversion to gay people...it's a poorly-reasoned resentment coming out of an early period of my life, where I had a lot of insecurity (and still do, to some extent).

However I do believe that gays should have full legal equality with straight people.

@Readerreader

The Vanity Fair article noted that she raised $400,000 the week the PAC was created but before it made its first overt solicitation.

The Republicans aren't lacking money...what they really need is some viable national leadership, or maybe just some people who aren't mentally ill.

@Uncle Fester

Recently I bought a telescope. Not a little department store telescope, but rather the larger kind that amateur astronomers play with.

I got this particular one because the optical and electronic fabrication is done right here in the USA...in Irvine, California.

However, when I opened the boxes there was a big sticker on the heavy duty tripod: Made in China.

So you see, it's not even completely our choice anymore.

Palin the Marxist

"And Alaska -- we're set up, unlike other states in the union, where it's collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs. ... It's to maximize benefits for Alaskans, not an individual company, not some multinational somewhere, but for Alaskans." --Sarah Palin, explaining the windfall profits tax that she imposed on the oil industry in Alaska as a mechanism for ensuring that Alaskans "share in the wealth" generated by oil companies, New Yorker interview, Sept. 2008

"Most blogs have some sort of audience, however tiny"

Most blogs are also not very interesting. Most bloggers have experiences that are very much like everyone else's, and they lack the storytelling skills to make these mundane experiences seem compelling.

But it's somehow enough that we share and acknowledge whatever it is that the blogger is talking about, however banal that may be.

And so we are all left holding up bic lighters in a huge arena, swaying to the music and checking each other out...only nobody is performing.

"I believe it is disengenuous to say on the one hand that she should leave her boyfriend because of his flaws...and turn around and encourage LW by telling her it is OK to be flawed."

It would be perfectly fine if the BF also left the LW over her flaws...flaws which are OK from her point of view.

What most people here are talking about is abusive behavior.

"He COULD be dangerous, sure. But people could just be punching their doorlocks because a black man walked by."

In such a situation, it is a far better idea to cut your losses by ending the relationship, no matter how emotionally attached you may have become. Otherwise this kind of controlling behavior is far more likely to escalate and intensify-rather than decline-as the relationship progresses.

Ruth Madoff: guilty of being a woman?

Guilty of being married to a major criminal, as it turns out.

Can we even question her judgement? Or is that too sexist?

Actually, marriage to a successful con artist could be the smart move in terms of sticking it to the patriarchy. Too bad he dropped the ball.

10 mil! You go girl!

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 10:12 AM

why doesn't the patriarchy want Ruth Madhoff to stay filthy rich?

it's an interesting question.
