the day they have Real Dolls for women

is the day there will be equality between the sexes.

the show mirrors its viewers.

actually, as a not especially desirable man, it's amazing how many women I've turned down

if human beings are intent on playing the "not good enough" game, there's plenty of misery to go around for both sides.

As for "Real Dolls"...when a truly accurate synthetic woman is finally created, you can bet that some women are going to be "Real Upset".

@Aranfell

well, your reaction to my snark says more about you than my snark ever could. And your reaction to that reaction would say even more. As would my reaction to the reaction to that reaction.

Dollhouse is a show for the torture generation

Disconnected, dehumanized, denatured...people rightly recoil from the "Real Dolls" concept, but when it's synthetic minds instead of bodies...suddenly, we have edgy "entertainment".

"Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome?" - Barry Convex

And why would anybody watch someone get their mind erased, and then fuck?

@mrsmonkey

When people masturbate, they use their imagination...obviously they are not imagining having sex with their hand when they fantisize, unless they have a hand fetish. And a Real Dolls user is probably not imagining having sex with a dead body, unless that happens to be their fetish.

So the question is, what is an acceptable aid to the imagination? Apparently hands and dildos are ok, while more realistic tools are deemed "creepy" for some reason.

television is not a medium of subtly

While subtle themes may be detected and enjoyed by the sophisticated viewer, it is my belief that most people tune in to watch the gross anatomy of a show: the tits, the power plays, the witty put-downs, the violence, the sexual voyeurism.

Dollhouse is like 24...it has a particular core audience that is essentially not prone to self-reflection, instead craving the sick thrills.

"And for those that think that the show is about viewers getting off on that: I think the problem lies in the eye of the beholder, not so much with the show."

Yes, the feminist take on both pornography and prostitution is that it evidences a disfunction of the consumer, not the producer.

Dollhouse is probably the worst show ever created in the history of television or in any of the theatrical arts for that matter

Like waterboarding, it won't be back next season.

the simpler the better, I say

on Mission Impossible, they would just peel off the old face.

Saturday, May 9, 2009 04:14 PM

as someone has said, it's possible that the NYTimes presented the historical torture story for the purpose of subversive subtext regarding current events

although it seems like they could have made the association explicit if they really wanted to.

a show so vile it defies description

and so I will not make the attempt. But when brain-erased escorts start showing up on the streets of America...don't say you weren't warned.

well sticking to the New York Times

they're keeping up the status quo as usual...but it also seems like they're trying to tell the truth, in their own weird way.

my own mother was a saint, rest her soul

however I have chosen not to create a mother myself, making little copies of me that would struggle aimlessly for property and ego-points.

"Seriously guys, what is it that you want exactly?"

I used to know a guy who was on a submarine in the navy. He said that after a while out there, some guys would masturbate with a piece of liver.

So in the case of these guys...what they wanted, exactly, was a piece of liver.

do the dolls have karma?

Do they retain karmic energy from one erasure/imprint cycle to the next? I'll admit I've never watched this show, but the prospect of "doll karma" intrigues me.

Although I suppose their karma would be mainly bad.

Original article: Why Sync Is So Difficult

I thought the whole idea of "the cloud" was a centralized data store with associated apps

that we would run on our little gizmos. Personally I hate the fact that my cell phone keeps copies of my 25 most recent emails. I would rather just access some reasonable approximation of my regular mail client with all the data remote, instead of using a phone mail applet thing that can't even read attachments.

Really, every one of these articles highlights how the current state of personal computing/connectivity truly is a reign of chaos.

Jung on the shadow

Unfortunately there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines himself or wants to be. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. Furthermore, it is constantly in contact with other interests, so that it is continually subjected to modifications. But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected.

there is a great pressure nowadays not to be "negative"

fueled by the great self-help, business psychology and personal development explosions. So the LW might be reacting against that.

Personally I feel that I'm under almost constant siege by coworkers, HR, the shrink, the media etc. as they all exort me to find my inner wonderchild, which sort of makes me sick.

Strangely though, there is this woman I'm interested in who is so cheery and upbeat it would make your teeth hurt.
