Original article: Bill Kristol wins a prize

Kristol just says what his pals want to hear

I think they call it the "big lie" technique.

@readerreader

your clumsy segues from the topic at hand, to your own special brand of Obama "commentary", are truly pathetic.

Omar, this just in...

Readerreader is not a big Kennedy fan.

I was wondering about that.

Original article: Bill Kristol wins a prize

@readerreader

The Kristol riff is a variation on the theme of Republican obfuscation over torture illegality.

The Kristol story is about a blatant propagandist getting a blatant payoff.

The only riff I see here is your tortured logic.

if you pay $5K

it better have at least 4 cylinders.

Thursday, April 23, 2009 01:01 PM

killing vs. torture and the laws of warfare

why do you think they say "a fate worse than death"?

The laws of warfare are based on a consensus among civilized nations who recognize that war is sometimes inevitable, but than utter barbarity does not have to be.

in the case of Palin it's probably for the best.

readerreader on the wall, who's the fairest of them all

Joan Walsh said they didn't win because they didn't enter, which is true as far as it goes.

speaking of big prizes, I wonder what JW gets from Salon every year?

probably not $250K...but who knows. That ad with Isabella Rossallini and the crawdad-thing must have generated some serious dollars.

@welcomerain

so what's your personal experience in this area? Did it work out? Or are you just one of those people who likes to yell STFU to people on the internet?

Friday, April 24, 2009 12:53 PM

perhaps elites and elite opinionmakers value the "protection" provided by torturing suspected terrorists over the protections provided by the constitution

maybe

Friday, April 24, 2009 01:11 PM

"Al Qaeda terrorists are not covered by the Geneva Conventions."

Those of us who see the increasing levels of asymmetrical conflict involving terrorism occuring in the world would like to see the US exercise a consistant standard of morality.

As opposed to creating secret torture prisons all over the world.

"Politically, on balance, I think a circus would hurt the Democrats. Remember, the "victim" here killed more than 3,000 people."

Prosecutions are the right thing to do. As a bonus, Bush II will be the most reviled ex-president since Nixon.

unsympathetic victims

sure. But I would prefer to draw the line in the sand now, as opposed to when American journalists and protesters are jailed and tortured.

Original article: There's an angel in my life

"As if all human beings, somehow, can divorce their present existence from past experience. What a crock of bullshit."

Denying your memories, and attempting to inhabit them, are two different things. I am cautioning against the latter.

Alexandra Paul, the Baywatch actress, is concerned about overpopulation

she recommends a vegetarian diet.

more on the vegetarian Baywatch connection

LONDON - MTV US presenter and former 'Baywatch' star Traci Bingham has become the latest model/actress/presenter to strip off for animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as it launches a new campaign to promote vegetarianism.

http://www.brandrepublic.com/News/150702/MTV-Baywatch-star-goes-naked-vegetarianism/

however...

Pamela Anderson is turning a blind eye to her hardcore vegetarian, anti-meat beliefs -- and it's all for her deep appreciation of strip clubs.

Anderson, who's been an obnoxiously loud animal activist and PETA spokesperson, is on board to help celebrate the upcoming opening of a strip club -- which happens to be part of a New York steakhouse.

someone needs to invent a Total Nutrition Bar

sort of like soylent green, but without the meat. Three bars a day for $5, 800 calories per bar, all your vitamins and minerals, protein carbs and fat. Have each bar with a glass of water.

The MRE is a similar concept, but they apparently cause major constipation when eaten for long periods of time.

I would "go green" just for the convenience factor...

Saturday, April 25, 2009 07:47 PM

reading readerreader

is torture

Saturday, April 25, 2009 07:51 PM

an entire day's nutrition in a bullion cube

just the size of a bullion cube, but not containing bullion...because bullion is murder.

Saturday, April 25, 2009 08:05 PM

today's menu

breakfast - cup of coffee and cinnamon roll at the farmer's market

lunch - cup of coffee and cheese sandwich at the fancy coffee shop

dinner - cup of coffee and some sort of horrible prefab sandwich at Starbucks

nightcap - can of tomato juice with a Centrum Silver

This is probably not ethical eating, due to Starbucks...I would like to switch from a sandwich-based lifestyle to one that relies on ethically-produced nutrition cubes. Perhaps something made of compressed beans.

Original article: Will I ever get over this?

recently I did a facebook search and saw someone I hadn't seen for nine years

and all the old feelings came back. Although it didn't work out, I always felt she and I were "the ones" for each other in some sense.

So I'm 48, and I really haven't gotten over it completely.

it was all Lyndon Johnson's fault.

"self-indulgent and full of crap"

you have zero respect for this person...why would she listen to your "advice"?

Why don't YOU do some volunteer work, and figure out where your garbage is coming from.

re: elephantman and the axis of evil

The only nation to use nuclear weapons on civilians was not North Korea, nor was it Iran. It was the United States. Total killed, roughly 200,000.

I'm also too creative to work

unfortunately nobody agrees with me.

Original article: Pandemic pandemonium

"But in a population of more than 300 million, that's an awfully small segment to cause a pandemic of global hypertension"

The rate of growth and demographic pattern of the disease, as well as the treatability and lethality of the virus, are more important than fixating on a simple prevalence rate at any given time.

as it turned out, the probability was 1.

I care if they torture people.

they should just pick a woman

all these things need to be 50/50 on gender...then maybe they'll stop yelling at us.

@ondelette

I wonder how you can compare politics to chaos theory on the one hand, and on the other hand advocate for a particular moral position...as it would seem that political advocacy would not have a cause-and-effect relationship with a chaotic system.
