most men probably just use the bathroom waste can

He sounds paranoid...besides, the correct trick is putting a needle through the center of the unused condom pack (also according to the media).

Hopefully he'll read this and drive himself crazy.

Original article: The fi-man-cial crisis

strawman, er, strawwoman

The point is not that a man without a job completely lacks masculinity...the point is that men over-identify with their means of livelihood, to the detriment of their relationships during bad financial times.

"female employment has fallen 4.7% to 3.8 million, while male employment has dropped 3.2% to 2.1 million"

Female employment is higher in this sector according to these numbers...why is rate of drop more significant than the total number employed re discrimination?

Friday, February 27, 2009 06:55 PM

the problem is not the media, it's the audience

There is a huge range of opinion available in the US...in the mass media, on the internet, and tacked to the wall at the local organic grocery store.

The problem is that people seek out the media they agree with.

Friday, February 27, 2009 07:13 PM

after all nobody wants shoes thrown at them

So the mass media is going to target their audience and avoid criticism wherever possible. That's just good business.

The larger question is why some people prefer Rush, and some people prefer Greenwald. Culture must play a role...although there are probably Greenwald fans from the deep south, and Rush fans from San Francisco.

Friday, February 27, 2009 07:18 PM

media theorists like McLuhan and Chomsky would say that content develops audiences and not the other way around

but I wonder if that is really true.

Friday, February 27, 2009 07:23 PM

@Derbig Mooser

No, they aren't equivalent...Rush is much more mainstream.

read the last few pages

you might come to a different conclusion

Friday, February 27, 2009 08:25 PM

But what if there were a price to pay?

By nationalizing print journalism, it would be possible to see real gains in accountability and transparency in reporting. Editors would no longer be bound to ownership interests, instead responding directly to the electorate (through representational committees).

Certainly the press-conference-as-graduate-seminar would be a welcome change from the current situation. Dissent could be handled using reader survey forms or sponsored opposition councils.

Hopefully this will be coming soon from the new administration.

Friday, February 27, 2009 08:37 PM

there would be real concerns about media independence under nationalization

But there are already huge problems regarding conflict of interest in the private sector; GE for example. Isn't it better to have a system that is responsive to democratic influence? One can "vote with their pocketbook", but it is much better to simply vote with one's vote.

Friday, February 27, 2009 08:44 PM

J-school leadership will be a welcome change from "unwritten rules" and advertiser influences

Because entertainment and news divisions are so tightly intertwined, there will be an adjustment period for content.

"There's no question that we are in a mess, a confusing one at best, a miserable and terrifying one at worst."

Frankly I'm not seeing what this mess is all about. Who's turn it is to clean the toilet? Interpersonal relationships are overrated anyway...one certainly has the option not to date a golddigger.

"Or that his rent was paid by a woman sent money by a top Saudi's wife who posted checks from Riggs Bank on which board a Bush brother sat."

Bank board members do not direct the activities of account holders...really, what are you trying to accomplish with this sort of information?

Friday, March 6, 2009 11:09 AM

"But according to NIST resistance to the falling top was minimal."

You've changed your story from "no resistance".

A large mass with low velocity can generate a large force. And not all phenomenon are amenable to a naive understanding.

How many pounds of C4 does it take to "pulverize" a 10 lb block of cement?. Of course you have no idea. But you "know" that gravity couldn't do the job...from looking at a video.

Friday, March 6, 2009 11:37 AM

"Here is a video to refresh your memory."

The debris arcs to me do not suggest an explosion. Also, explosions usually exhibit an initial, extremely fast pressure wave which should be seen in the form of ejected fire smoke, at the start of the collapse, near the top of the building.

Friday, March 6, 2009 12:24 PM

@Bill Owen

"It may not have "looked" that what to you Mr. Anderson, but it sure as hell looked that way to Danny Jowenko, a Dutch controlled demolition expert."

The discussion you have quoted was about what the explosion looked like. If we are going to go with the experts, I prefer the official version.

Also: London Lad, if there were really a link in your six degrees of separation story, I would think that the Bushes would have covered thier tracks a bit better.

Friday, March 6, 2009 01:08 PM

"Time and space here does not allow for a complete explication of the arguments against the official version."

I have no interest in researching your opinions.

That you see this blog as a tie-in page to your various "truth" and "patriot" sites is really the larger problem.

Friday, March 6, 2009 01:47 PM

"Who the damned hell do you think you are to disagree with a director of NASA FLIGHT RESEARCH ..."

The argument from authority is particularly weak when your are arguing against the authorities.

it's difficult to get a professional such as a journalist to live according to our standards

however, everybody has the ability to educate themselves and read a variety of news sources...arguably a better bet than relying on "gold standard" media outlets, and the behavior of the journalists they employ
