seriously though

The left says "torture must stop" but the left must also believe that there are systemic reasons for torture. What systemic changes are being proposed by the left? And what is the mechanism for communicating this information to Obama?

Friday, February 13, 2009 08:08 PM

Well Mr. G wants an activist left

like J. Lennon said: we'd all love to see the plan

Friday, February 13, 2009 08:22 PM

it hurts

when they just think I'm a dittohead

Friday, February 13, 2009 08:35 PM

she hasn't done anything illegal

one instance of this hardly constitutes a disturbing new trend that requires the unleashing of hugely powerful forces of social sanction...or maybe it does

Friday, February 13, 2009 09:12 PM

well I used to get all the channels

there was the Hungarian Cartoon Network and the Clay Channel and Boxing for Condoms...but I gave it all up and now I have more money to spend on gasoline

Saturday, February 14, 2009 10:08 AM

your twisted desire to use friends and acquaintances as pawns in this empty game of "love"

or something like that

Saturday, February 14, 2009 10:14 AM

once I bought some pants on ebay

I don't know why...they weren't a very good deal.

Saturday, February 14, 2009 11:59 AM

@tomreedtoon

wow...I thought I was bitter

GG may be a great writer

but his market is marginal...the internet as a whole may be wildly popular, but it's so fragmented that one might have better luck shouting on a street-corner.

The "blather" in this case is contained in those long, lawyerly blog entries that hope to go up against the simple-minded giants of the mass media.

"Excoriates" in your lead? News flash...most of the US population has not taken the GRE.

Saturday, February 14, 2009 12:32 PM

@omooex

unfortunately, you also might get 1000 times the flack from hecklers!

Saturday, February 14, 2009 01:59 PM

@GG

I find that when people come and make comments like the one you just made, there is never any basis cited for the judgment.

My judgment is based on looking at the ads on Salon, and reading what people have to say on your blog.

Evidently I am wrong, and you have the reach and impact of, say, Anderson Cooper. Kudos.

A different person wrote:

I think Mr. Anderson has left the building in search of a less challenging street corner.

Sorry to deprive you of an hour's pie-throwing. I went outside. Do you remember "outside"?

the New York Times provides Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism

2003: Clifford J. Levy, The New York Times, "for his vivid, brilliantly written series 'Broken Homes' that exposed the abuse of mentally ill adults in state-regulated homes."

Original article: I Like to Watch

the average guy hasn't been with 150 women

I think it's more like seven...and the average guy is titillated by prostitution.

TV entertainment is rarely documentary in nature...the murders, rapes, and acts of larceny are just projections of our dark fantasies.

Enjoy!

calamine thanks for the pep talk

As it happens, I'm involved in a situation with a lady that may or may not work out.

Sunday, February 15, 2009 12:41 PM

"Bass-O-Matic" this was not

Aykroyd looks like he's ready to run for congress himself

Sunday, February 15, 2009 05:31 PM

who is looking for a WoW killer?

Judging from the number of comments, nobody.

Original article: Coming home: The conclusion

@NavyShrink

As the son of a Navy combat veteran of WWII, I can only imagine the man he might have been, without the military.

Sunday, February 15, 2009 06:05 PM
Original article: Coming home: The conclusion

"I think a more likely explanation is that the rise in suicides reflects the greater percentage of enlistees with preexisting mental illness..."

Why is the military accepting people with preexisting mental disorders?

Research (and common sense) would tell you that these people are not good choices for combat positions.

Sunday, February 15, 2009 06:08 PM
Original article: Coming home: The conclusion

here I'll answer the question for you

these people can do the job until they're killed or until they break, and then you can say they were already screwed up to begin with.

Sunday, February 15, 2009 06:13 PM
Original article: Coming home: The conclusion

"As long as someone is not psychotic (reality sense intact) they are 100% responsible for their behavior."

Are recruiters responsible for letting mentally ill people into the military? Maybe not...they might be psychotic.

Sunday, February 15, 2009 06:15 PM
Original article: Coming home: The conclusion

"...which manifests itself as a constellation of highly ingrained opinions about the treatment of our vets..."

I don't really have any ingrained opinions about my dad's treatment, since there wasn't any.

Sunday, February 15, 2009 06:17 PM
Original article: Coming home: The conclusion

"I tell all my patients that my job is more alike that of a consultant."

The problem here is that you're a consultant to the military, not the patient.

"criminal investigations remain the leading position among Americans generally and among majorities of Democrats specifically. Those are just facts."

Also, half of Americans believe that they are protected by guardian angels:

that torture and capital punishment are abuses of state power.

glad to see that someone on salon appreciates the interconnected nature of our experience here on planet earth

"I maintain crushes on a few people"

maybe it's time to let the maintenance contract lapse

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 09:20 PM

tell your husband that grad school isn't carbon-neutral

maybe he should get a job at the recycling center, crushing cans

Wednesday, February 18, 2009 12:24 PM

a totally sexually satisfied man is not nearly as interested in the promotion, the house, the car, the boat, the motorcycle, the xbox, the gym membership, the sixty dollar shirts, the rock climbing gear etc etc

women are just doing their part to keep us spending our money

all that really matters

was it first or second degree murder?

There are no style points that I'm aware of.

"The issue is communicating better about it, and getting some compromise when he so passionately believes the future of humanity is at stake."

Maybe you should suggest that he see a psychiatrist.

world-class freak and criminal

Roman needs to come home so he can be properly appreciated

Thursday, February 19, 2009 02:44 PM
Original article: Whitewashing Roman Polanski

Mr. Polanski would like our sympathy

but many of us feel only "Repulsion".

Thursday, February 19, 2009 05:44 PM
Original article: Whitewashing Roman Polanski

imprisoning Polanski is important because it sends a message to his legion of apologists, syncophants and yes-butters

there are no mitigating circumstances when raping a 13 year old.

Thursday, February 19, 2009 06:30 PM

smaller papers have been doing this for years

they have a section called "rap sheet" or something similar where various criminals and their crimes are listed, sometimes with pictures.

Thursday, February 19, 2009 07:12 PM
Original article: The new pornographers

only counted two instances of legal action in the article

considering the number of teenagers and cellphones in the US...prosecution of "sexting" under porn laws doesn't seem like much of a trend.

If there was a trend, there would be significant numbers of people being prosecuted, with a significant increase in prosecutions over some predetermined time period.

If anything, two instances of prosecution would show that this is NOT a trend...if two instances were statistically significant. Which they probably aren't.

Thursday, February 19, 2009 07:21 PM

that's a lot of phones

I think I have two or three in that shoebox over there.

Original article: Whitewashing Roman Polanski

"I am a woman, a feminist, a veteran of THAT particular Hollywood/NYC scene in the 70s and the molestation--with or without consent-- of young boys and girls by the rich and famous was not unusual."

Could you give us some names?
