maureenodonnell, pardon me for butting in

However, I have the answer to your question. Mr. Robot has spelled it "hounds", but the part underneath says "hounds's" which is just an automated caption thing from Salon.

This is not to say that Electro Robot is not suffering from something serious...but his spelling is usually impeccable.

to deviate from the norm is to risk destruction

While I may wish to wear something other than business casual (even in bed!), the risks are too great.

In the very near future, all deviants will be swept away and destroyed by powers we can barely comprehend...not divine powers, but rather the powers of social paranoia and abject fear.

Heather needs a "sticky" sci-fi thread at the top of all her columns

Of course, most of the letters will be about Battlestar Galactica, but Babylon 5 and STNG people would be welcome too.

from anecdote to trend

Lots of people are giving up. Me, I was involved with someone for about two months, two years ago. Before that, I don't really remember...

It's fun to make this into some sort of gender thing...but really, it's just about not giving a shit anymore.

Hell is other people, after all.

his weird advice for Republicans is entirely appropriate.

Cary is right...this kind of thing takes time

A number of years I lost almost everything: job, mate, sanity. Luckily I held onto my apartment and a few friends.

There is no magic bullet...it just takes time.

Saturday, February 7, 2009 01:18 PM
Original article: Senate cuts a stimulus deal

"For those who like the idea of transferring assets to the poor, this is fine."

I don't think the stimulus package transfers any assets to the poor...it uses tax money to pay for services, which is happening right now anyway.

The idea that services received are "assets" is not a mainstream economic concept, IMO.

Saturday, February 7, 2009 06:30 PM

community?

This rebranding of the consumer base into a "community" that provides "feedback" is how the software industry reduces the cost of testing: by selling products that aren't finished.

Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead with their cruftware on my machine.

However, these people have learned the tricks needed to make money in tv. I should correct myself, because they are not evil: they are mentally ill.

But it's uncool to be the kind of person who wouldn't friend an old friend, who's wasn't really a friend anyway.

Excuse me, what was the question again?

Sunday, February 8, 2009 06:53 PM

You're not forced to friend anyone. What does age have to do with it?

when the drugs work

you feel normal, and you want to do what you normally do...which might be drinking or using pot. But then, if the drugs really worked, you probably wouldn't want to drink or use pot.

Or would you?

It's an interesing puzzle...hopefully it won't lead to the psych ward.

Monday, February 9, 2009 09:40 PM

"You should support him in this method of self-medication if he agrees to always do it within reason"

What is "within reason" for someone having a manic episode, exactly? Because drugs and alcohol can trigger a manic episode.

Your lithium, depacote or whatever WILL prevent manic episodes...but they aren't a magic all-purpose bullet for feeling swell.

So you get drunk or stoned...just like any other addict.

McGruff the Crime Dog doesn't want you on pot

he wants you on a Tegretol/Risperdal/Wellbutrin cocktail

Tuesday, February 10, 2009 08:24 AM

@transient2

Psychiatric medications generally don't provide a cause-and-effect "lift": they relieve symptoms gradually. Because alcohol and pot provide immediate positive feedback, they pose an addiction risk.

coming at Obama from the left

I wish you folks would just spell out the plan:

- nationalization of banks and key industries

- mandated 2-child reproduction cap

- ban on private autos

- free everything

- immediate nuclear bombing of Israel

- re-education for those who disagree

Come on...give Obama something to work with!
