Original article: The two-boyfriend problem

to ever be loved

The people portrayed in this letter give us many opportunities to poke fun at them. All the sadder, because sometimes love comes only once in a life...and how can they tell if they're missing the big chance?

It's easy enough to laugh and move on to the next article, acid wit at the ready. But for those actually in the situation, the trivial can seem dire indeed.

there were loud objections during Bush

the key difference with Obama is that he appears to listen

CATCIDT

Google it and see how it has a high profile in the blogosphere but virtually none anywhere else. That would be the first problem to address.

"Unless, of course, we are content to be the generation that ends history."

History is in no danger. However, the future requires us to innovate if we don't want to have our numbers drastically reduced.

war is war

but strategic attacks on civilians are wrong...are we just going to give up completely on being a force for good in the world?

mostly I just lurk here...and I have to say that sometimes the criticism goes beyond attacking Israeli policy, and flirts with anti semitism...IMO

however, that isn't very often...but people who post both from the right and from a position of anarchy have truly "stopped making sense"...even Elephantman sounds lost.

another point is that some people simply don't believe research about global warming

For example, it was thought that once we mapped the genome we would be able to cure all sorts of diseases. But it turned out that the interactions between genes were much more complicated than previously thought.

This is not to say that global warming theories are incorrect. However, the debate "out here", away from the research, is often political rather than scientific and so is dependent on personal biases.

If the research presented to the public can't overcome these biases, then that's a problem...unless what the public thinks doesn't matter.

"Repeating the myth that A.A. opposes psychiatric medication perpetuates misunderstanding of the A.A. program."

The problem isn't the program...it's the membership. People in AA encourage you to totally define yourself as an alcoholic, even if your problem is obviously depression or bipolar.

I ended up following more of a medical model for my problems, rather than AA. Again, I would say that the issue is more with the culture of AA than with the program itself.

Thursday, January 15, 2009 09:27 AM

when was it ever about doing what's right?

Investigations in Washington are generally about Team A beating up on Team B. In this case, both teams are on the same side...and nothing is going to happen.

@bernbart

People were able to forget the 170,000 children killed by the Iraq sanctions pretty well, but for some reason they can't get past the actions of the Bush administration.

Well...posters here will argue that different historical events are not linked logically; that lack of action in one area does not justify lack of action in another.

But these actions ARE linked...they're linked by our collective ability to forgive ourselves, and forget...whether it's justified or not.

It's popular here to demonize Bush, but in a way we've just reaped what we've been sowing, going all the way back to when we nuked civilians at Hiroshima.

If mainstream America can forgive that, they can probably forgive some abuses of the Constitution.

@ SailFree

The output of a job is goods or services. Profitability is more a function of business, not employment per se. Even companies that are going out of business employ people in jobs. Government workers also have jobs and produce stuff...stuff you apparently don't value, like roads and scientific research and such.

People who work for the government do in fact have jobs, in spite of your private definition.

maureenodonnell can't you be happy for us?

Original article: Can we talk?

good old fashioned conversation?

People who talk over you, don't listen, talk too long, have no sensitivity regarding the emotional state of the listener...

Conversation is overrated, like sex. Sure, it's good when it's good...but when is that? All the time for the self actualized wonder-people, not so often for me.

Better to hijack the neighbors wireless, and troll.

GG, Chomsky, Nader

state the political problem in moral terms (always), and then take the moral position. This renders their opinions

unassailable

iconic

not easily combined with other viewpoints

Clearly, the Obama administration is not going to pursue this. To do so would be to take his political agenda off the front pages for the next year at least.

it's not that simple

companies have been releasing "beta versions" of software on the internet for years...programmers aren't the only ones defining the term (from the public's point of view, anyway).

torture USA

Somebody once told me that every treaty made with Native Americans has been broken...by us.

In my experience, laws are applied most stringently to the "little people"...meaning the architects of torture will walk.
