maybe not the best solution

I commute by bike and would not want to discourage anyone else from doing so, but I wonder about all these bikes with trailers creaking along at 7 mph.

Last year I went to a Mexican resort town for vacation and there were tons of scooters and gas-powered golf carts...less energy efficient than bikes for sure, but also a lot better than 4500lb SUVs.

It is too bad that diversity in transportation doesn't include more diversity in gas-powered machines.

the view of McCain as yesterday's candidate

more widespread than you think

Saturday, July 26, 2008 10:10 AM

@MOD

"I was amazed recently to read that "Who does he/she think she is?" can be regarded as racist in the United States although it's frequently said of people whose high opinion of themselves has little or nothing to do with reality. In Victorian England "knowing your station" was an expression used to encourage people to accept their lowly status in a snobbish, stratified society."

In the United States, the meaning of a particular statement is sometimes dependent on context. For example, if one could imagine that "who does he think he is" would not be said about McCain in a situation similar to the one Obama found himself in, and it was said about Obama, well...some people would say that's racist.

In your country the rules of human logic may operate differently.

@maureenodonnell

Obama is still campaigning. Europe has cultural ties to the US and a sizable number of people there are enthusiastic about him. What would be the purpose of a China visit right now? There will be time for that later.

as good as the show

It was pretty entertaining, although the Mulder/Scully scenes became sort of depressing after a while. I saw the anti-gay theme more as anti-russian while I was watching the movie...but I suppose in hindsight it was pretty awful.

GA looks great and it is a pleasure to see close-ups of an attractive woman who is not a barbie type (like Mulder's temporary FBI partner).

I think it's either african american or black

"AA" is Alcoholics Anonymous...but of course the dittoheads already know that.

BTW the charge of racism is a perfectly legitimate response to the concern-trollers who want to "invite debate" on Obama's presumed inadequacies...we are asking you to examine your own racism, while you are asking us to look at our candidate as YOU frame him.

For example, the racism frame is no less fair than the "experience" frame. Certainly Obama is qualified to run for office. Should we endlessly debate your list of presumed requirements for the job?

The answer is NO. And many of you have already said that you don't want to hear about racism any more.

re AA

My experience here is that the term "AA" in reference to the african american community is used exclusively by anti-obama posters. That's the "context".

In the case of my last post "you" can be replaced by "dittohead".

about 85 people died during the night of the long knives

I don't think GG is proposing murder. But if I'm reading him right he does seem to think that Democratic Party membership should be limited to those people who actually support its values.

People can still vote whatever way they want in the general election, after all.

One can make the argument that the blue dogs are not the problem, and that since Clinton's presidency the party in general has gone towards the right into "pro-choice corporatism".

That may be true to some extent. Still, it is obvious that the current Congress is not supporting core Democratic values. Why not first look within for solutions?

"What is it that keeps you in the company of people you hate?"

MOD do you have a dog in this fight?

nice of you to be so concerned about what we Democrats are up to

Tuesday, July 29, 2008 04:28 PM

@maureenodonnell

That is all true but not really germane to the issue of Irish influence within the Democratic Party. Presumably you would "vote your interests"...and that really is the issue when it comes to the blue dogs.
