The only negative on Biden is the 'foot in mouth' syndrome. This comes across as less of a negative once you realize the Republican nominee puts his foot in his mouth almost daily, often the whole leg!
Biden gives the ticket the much needed experience factor, especially in regard to foreign affairs. Although this pick could be criticized as 'not new enough', Biden is a hell of a lot more of a maverick than McCain.
First of all, the polling data is about 'likely' voters. The only way Obama wins is if people who aren't usually counted on to vote, do so. Obama's whole run to the presidency is built on energizing groups who don't normally vote.
Also, the 'cell phone' vote is a dangerous group to ignore, which pollsters do.
Since Biden was my original choice for President before the Barack / Hillary show, I couldn't be more pleased.
Biden has that rare quality of being a hardworking insider, but retaining his outsider appeal. I thought Obama did a very good job of answering the Rovian attacks quickly, but with Biden on his team the responses will not only be quicker, but the Republicans will be playing quite a bit of defense.
Great job on your first big decision Barack!
After getting my upbeat positive dose from Oberman, I turned to Fox to see what their reaction was.
Juan Williams, responding to an almost speechless Brit Hume, was truly touched and got the historical significance of the moment. Then there was Bill Kristol. Ah, Billy boy. After smirking and stammering all he could come up with was how disappointed he was that Michelle didn't mention his alma mater, Harvard.
Then I was 'lucky' enough to catch Ben Stein on Larry King, where he feigned being indignant about the lack of mention of the troops.
I don't know how the rest of the convention will go. I don't know if the Dems will get a bump, or change any minds. What I do know is that the Republicans witnessed a force they have no idea whatsoever how to reckon with.
The woman, knowing that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant, accepts this nomination that would put her and her family under intense public scrutiny.
Clearly a person who puts ambition ahead of family.
Look. A year and half ago my son and his girlfriend got pregnant. He was 21 she was 19. I accepted it and now have a magnificent grandson. The kids live in town so the girl can be close to her mom. The mom (grandmother) is an integral part in the raising of this child. It's because of her that the girl can go back to school and both parents can work.
How the hell is Sarah Palin going to support this daughter. Let us not forget she also has an infant.
The judgment here in accepting the VP nod is astoundingly poor. Not only did Palin know she was about to become a grandmother, but she must have understood the scrutiny her 17 year old would go through.
This is astounding to me. I was speechless at McCain's ridiculous choice to begin with and with each passing day it becomes more apparent how self serving and reckless Republicans truly are.
She appealed to the base and threw tons of red meat to the crowd. Smart move skipping the video and building on the 'foaming at the mouth' that Guiliani got going.
By being negative, un-factual (raising taxes, shipping jobs out, not for energy independence, and extremely sarcastic, she has essentially given Biden the green light to 'bring it on'. He has no reason to fear attacking her lack of experience in the debates.
Really looking forward to it.
I really don't think this is going to appeal to swing or independent voters.
After years of my wife putting up with, and even chuckling at my ranting at the O'Reilly's et. al. of the world, I sit in stunned silence as she rants every time Palin shows up on t.v.
My lukewarm political sister from Florida. Same reaction.
My son's quiet sister-in-law. Visceral.
My mother in law, who has never brought up politics in the 12 years I've known her, asked my wife what she thought of Palin.
My Montana bred apolitical teaching partner, brought up politics for the first time in 5 years.
Somethins a brewin' folks. The pols are 'likely' voters, non-cell phone users.
Once Palin has to actually think before she speaks the shine will wear off. That is for those who are fooled by the shine.
This election ain't even gonna be close.
As the scratches accumulate on the surface of the McCain-Palin armor, it'll rust and eventually fall apart.
It's going to be real hard to ignore where they are coming from, and what their strategy is, even from those who aren't political junkies.
I believe Obama is correct when he says, "Americans aren't stupid."
