Stunning hypocrisy

Where was all this indigant defense of voter rights when the DNC set its rules on primary dates and delegate recognition in the first place? Did anyone at the DNC stand up for us then?

I nearly sat out the Florida primary because of the insulting pledge that most of the candidates took, to not campaign in Florida (although they of course were allowed to take our money; they just couldn't speak to us.) But I voted, because at the time, we voters were being told not to worry our pretty little heads; of course the delegates would be seated.

That was when it was assumed there'd be another overwhelming victory by an all-but-predetermined winner -- wow, just like John Kerry '04! -- and it wouldn't matter.

I'll vote for the Democrat no matter who it is in November, but I am getting damed sick of my loyalty being taken for granted.

Original article: Bad Dad Gift Guide

Man-bashing? Huh?

I agree it might have been preferable to write a positive story about dads for Father's Day, but this article can hardly be called man-bashing.

Does it say anywhere that these guys are typical of most men?

OK, the writer could have noted that the vast majority of Imperial Death Star Commanders are fine dads who coach Little League and massage their wives' feet without being asked, but he probably just figured it went without saying.

By the way, thanks for ruining the ending of "Empire Strikes Back"!

I assume the letter is real

Most of the advice here is coming from presumably liberal people who think nothing of masturbation and can't believe anyone would make such a fuss about this. But the LW says a couple of times that she lives in a conservative town, and you would be amazed at how backward many poeple still are about masturbation. When I was in PTA another mom told me rather proudly that she had told her son his hand would fall off if he masturbated! And I live in a fairly moderate area.

So I think the LW fills her letter with so many details because she feels the need to justify and explain.

I'm wondering if the "submissive" LW really wanted to get caught. In such an oppressive town, why in the world would she not lock her door on the off chance that the stray 3 percent of her customers would show up on Happy Day? Is her real problem that she didn't get scolded for being a bad girl?

As to whether her friend actually saw what she was doing -- well, did she refuse to shake hands?

. . . the creepy "My friends" intro to every other sentence.

Original article: "The House Bunny"

I want to see this, but

one thing has been bugging me as I watch the ads. I think this movie is probably closer to "Revenge of the Nerds" than to "Legally Blonde." A bunch of so-called losers remake themselves and win in the end.

But the Nerds win by embracing their nerdiness. They actually get more nerdy, not less. They make the world come to them on their terms.

So is this another movie about women succeeding by shedding their ugly selves and finding acceptance only after they have made themselves more acceptable to the world at large? Because that's how women are supposed to succeed?

I sure hope not.

Extended temper tantrum

I know that the above title makes it sound like I'm dismissing these as "hysterical" women, but that's the best metaphor I can find. And I do include the male PUMAs in this.

I want to believe that the PUMAs are just saying these things to make their unhappiness known, to go on the record and add a footnote to history. I want to believe that when it comes down to it they will swallow their hurt feelings and vote for Obama.

Because good God, the idea that, as Traiser points out, they would get pissed off about Obama calling a woman "Sweetie" yet even think about voting for a throwback who would deny us reproductive rights, equal pay and a host of other important things -- it's just mind-boggling.

First, I am a die-hard Democrat

But let's also hope that Biden doesn't stuff his foot in his own mouth, as he has so many times before. To let her hang herself by going on and on he'll first have to let her get a word in edgewise.

Let's also hope that when he gets onto Iraq, Palin doesn't remind him that he was one of the members of Congress who helped get us there by voting for the resolution authorizing use of force if necessary. (Not that the approval wasn't completely misinterpreted later.)

I would love for her to go down in flames, and between her lack of depth and the lack of a cheering crowd to egg her on at a formal debate, it could happen. Then we may finally see the Republicans get the humiliating-landslide defeat in November that they are SO due for.

But I'm not getting my hopes up.

Original article: I Like to Watch

It's inexplicable

Love "Always Sunny." Think it's genius. Can't even bear to watch the ads for "Testees."

There is more to "Always Sunny" than idiot losers acting stupid. These people are and do what everyone would be and do if we had no conscience.

And after 4 seasons, not a single character has been forced to become likable. I don't think I've watched a single TV comedy -- except maybe "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" -- which did not eventually cave in to network demands that the cast become likable or the audience would reject them. Anyone who ever loved the briefly brilliant "Buffalo Bill" knows what I mean.

Speaking of which, trivia: Kaitlin Olson, who plays Dee, also played Cheryl David's religious-nut sister on the first few seasons of "Curb." Dee is way less self-serving than that character.
