  • You experienced stealth New Age religiosity

[Read the article: Why I hate partner yoga]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Christian fundamentalists have nothing on the New Agers when it comes to self-righteousness and the belief that theirs' is the ONLY way to salvation, or in their case, enlightenment. What you experienced in California was new-agers pushing their religious concepts onto unsuspecting yoga participants.

lexicon's letter is a prefect illustration of the attitude most every new-ager I encounter exhibits. You are not allowed to question ("work yourself into a frenzy") or disagree with anything, such as staring into someone's eyes, and the pat response is ALWAYS "it must be your fault," or you are just not righteous enough ("like ME!"). lexicon's admonitions and advice are perfect New-Age--narrow and absurd.

  • RE: Really, Salon?

[Read the article: Why I hate partner yoga]

    Definition of ridiculous self-indulgence: fun.

So Anonymous, what do you do for fun? Don't you ever like to read about or watch on TV other people's experiences having the same sort of fun? I think professional sports are about the silliest waste of time and thought ever. Ditto televised race car or poker games, rather watch paint dry. I dont watch TV at all actually, pure waste of time. But Salon and every newspaper is full of TV and sports-related articles. Hmmm, can't remember though the last yoga article I read in Salon. I guess for some one is too many.

  • This Opus ought to satisfy the men children who yearn. . .

    [Read the article: Opus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

for the good 'ol non-political inoffensive happy Opus of their youth.

We ought to welcome those who go off-topic when there is no "topic" in the first place!

So. I wonder how many of those who complain Obama has no experience are also those who complain that candidates are always Washington/corporate establishment insiders. You want business as usual, vote for Hillary or McCain.

The "he has no experience" argument is a cover for reservations they would rather not express. There can be no other explanation for why liberal, well-informed people would make that argument about Obama.

  • RE: wrong, anonymous

    Well put!

I especially appreciated the "Be-Bop's sub-Joycean affectations" and implication of schizophrenia. Thank you for expressing so well the annoyance I've felt for so long.

  • Blue Meme and acronyms

[Read the article: The fun and excitement of civilization wars (fought from afar)]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Blue Meme, that explanation of the Republican brain is something every American should read. Excellent!

    However, what is IMDB?

Other letter-writers use acronyms that mystify me as well, and I am well-read. What is OT? RMP (or was it RFP?) UFW?

Please, writers, don't play this insider's game on everyone! I dont sit and read blogs all day--is that where these are used? They are real stumbling blocks. I know what FISA is and other acronyms commonly used in the press, but internet/blog acronyms should be spelled out because Salon and its readership are not necessarily all blogger types. Thanks.

  • Energy-sucking people

[Read the article: I somehow became the "Charlie" girl at the local bar!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Cary's right about people, many look to others to fulfill their needs for love and attention while giving nothing in return. Recognize who is only interested in sucking energy and avoid their traps. If the other person only wants an ear to bend, that is disrespectful. It is taking without giving.

You sound like a marvelous person. Take the first part of Cary's advice, but DON'T go back to that bar. It IS high school, but now you are college-level. It has been a wonderful learning experience for you. You have grown tremendously and gained much confidence. Now take it to the next level, as Cary intimated.

  • "Housewife?"

[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm surprised that Salon still uses the word "housewife" so unselfconsciously.

  • Wacko advice

[Read the article: Help! I'm committing professional suicide!]

Like the first letter-writer said, depression. Jeepers, could it have been any easier?

  • No silly bickering and game-playing? Sounds like an improvement to me!

[Read the article: "Survivor" in the rubbish]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Mieszkowski makes numerous complaints that the participants don't hate each other. For those of us who don't appreciate dumbed-down television, this is an improvement. Bickering and game-playing is boring and childish. Now for once a show where adults actually try to get along and NOT play silly games. And a model nations need to adopt if we are going to make any headway into solving our global problems.

  • Chinese cultural ignorance meets American arrogance

[Read the article: An Olympic disgrace]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The Chinese hosts' ignorance of their guests' customs was quite incredible--imagine visiting Indian Hindus being served beef steaks. This to me was the real story here, but the author chose instead to embarrass himself by demonstrating his cultural arrogance (disingenuously perhaps--in the service of inflammatory journalism). It is not our place to campaign for Chinese people to cease eating dogs and cats. Yes we ought to attempt to raise their consciousness with respect to animal treatment and humane killing. Returning to the Indian Hindu example, I haven't seen many Indians making waves and clamoring for Americans to stop eating cows.

  • Good points, ixvnyc; however. . .

Free-ranging chickens have intelligence and distinct personalities and are endlessly fascinating to watch. Are we going to have an intelligence cut-off for determining which creatures we deem worthy of respect equal to ourselves? I'll never see the day, but I hope one day we will honor the ocean halibut, the basement spider, and the soil mycellium as much as the dog with the wagging tail.

Before anyone blows a gasket, I'm talking about HONOR and RESPECT. I don't suggest we never put a shovel to earth, but that we need to be aware that we live in partnership with all the life around us, and that all life can feel.

  • Kamiya 110% correct

[Read the article: Rev. Jeremiah Wright isn't the problem]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What he writes about immediate post-9/11 is EXACTLY what I instinctively felt and thought AT THE TIME. I watched in horror as the country willingly swallowed the "patriotism" opium and threw away it's ability to reason and see the lies. I could see SO clearly EXACTLY what was happening just as Kamiya explains it. It was just like what I had read about Nazi Germany. It was quite an education in the stupidity of the masses.

And now Kamiya is 110% correct on the Wright uproar. Skimming through a few of the letters here just reminds me once again how Americans can't think and reason very well. And I wonder how many who are spouting off on the issue ACTUALLY READ Obama's speach. Clearly many have not.

  • Well DUH

[Read the article: Nagourney: "At least one scenario where Clinton could win"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"What Clinton is going to need is for Obama to suffer a collapse in polls . . . "

Is this supposed to pass for insightful commentary?
