Original article: Skip Gates, please sit down

Seriously, why?

What is the point of this article? That he didn't know this place? I thought he WAS at his place. That he shouldn't have spoken out to the officers? Are you all that into the police state mentality already? If he didn't break any laws, or do anything wrong, which apparently he didn't since charges were dropped, then nothing he did do should have landed him in jail - bottom line.

Anything else is just excusing pretty poor judgement from the cop. He already knew nothing was wrong there, they should have just left.

I hadn't heard about this

So thanks for that Glenn. It doesn't surprise me that someone taking his job seriously, as Barofsky seems to be, would be running into this kind of problem in Washington. The last thing anybody in Washington wants is accountability for their actions. I wish him luck.

those potential figures should cause an outcry from Americans, but really, I have no idea what would actually do that at this point.

Are there really people out there who believe anything they read in the Post?

There, fixed that for you. ;-)

Original article: Waiting for the Blue Dogs

The question is

If you have Blue Dog support, will what's left be worth while?

I think Douglas is exactly right.

@D Moran

Even though it wasn't really to me, I agreed with your reply anyway. It isn't the money. They want to be obstructionist, and their pay masters make money off of people's illness. When poor people die, it doesn't cost them money.

I understand the rage, believe me.

Original article: Is the public option dead?

Without a public option

This likely isn't worth toilet paper. Used.

If we're this off-topic

And not paying attention to Glenn's fine post, maybe we could talk about this rather than some people's particular psychological needs.

@Kitt

Who's being endangered? At first blush, I'd guess Cheney and his cabal. Remember, it's the American people they want to keep this from. The Iraqis and Afghanis already know the US tortures people, it couldn't really have much more affect out there. But on this continent?

Actually, I don't even think it would. It must be a reflex to just cover up. Cheney could admit to everything on TV, and he'd still never see a day in court, let alone jail.

You know what I find interesting?

That you can make a point, and the rebuttals tend to be simple insults and delusional fantasies. Until I started reading the comments on Salon articles, I don't think that it had occurred to me just how willing to work against their own interests some people how. Or how uninterested some people are in true discourse. Or how unable to make (or even fake) an actual argument some people are.

It's quite sad.

That's a great essay

Particularly the point about the media not recognizing criticism of their conventions. I think it's just part of their cover. If they can point to "everybody does it this way", they don't have to actually examine the way they do their job. I'm guessing that most of them want to avoid that at all costs, because it would destroy the self-image they've been working so hard to create.

Thanks.

Oh, good lord

I've seen how this story goes, and it's never pretty. It's gonna be a disaster, again. The end results are always the same with this model, the big money goes in, and the families on the ground get screwed out of whatever resources they have. The fact that it's food will only make this worse.

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 06:26 PM

Judging by the comments, I'm missing something

And it's not from Glenn's post. Why is it that the point everybody is arguing over is whether Olbermann knew about the deal or not? I'm not saying that isn't an issue, but isn't the larger point that GE worked with FOX to keep information that the public should have from being aired?

If people are looking at censuring anybody, they really looking way too low here.

Wednesday, August 5, 2009 11:59 AM

Do these people listen to themselves?

Short answer, no. I'd be too embarrassed to be Hilary and say something like that. Do they think that the rest of the world isn't laughing at statements like that?

Until the US cleans up some of it's own mess, nobody anywhere is going to pay attention to things they just say. Thanks for that, Glenn.

A punch in the nose

That's pretty much the only rational response to these people. They will lie to your face, and it's because they don't care if you die. That's the the thing to remember - they don't care if you die. A public health-care system would keep more Americans healthy and alive, but they don't care if it threatens to cut into their money.

Disgusting.

Thursday, August 6, 2009 06:22 PM

That's a great idea

I can't wait to hear the (non)responses you get. It seems to me that this is exactly the kind of hypocrisy that most people in the media don't want to deal with.

I'm still waiting

I'm sure the outrage from the MSM about Rush's comments will be along any minute now.

Pedinska - Muskol is the thing. Helps against both mosquitos and black flies, a lot. Saved my life one summer. :-)

Nope, still nothing. Maybe it's just not so bad if Rush says it. Yeah, I'm sure that's the reasoning behind this.

Saturday, August 8, 2009 09:03 AM

@Pedinska re: Muskol

When the options are that or being dried out like a grape, you reach for the bottle eagerly. In some places the swarms will drive you out of your mind otherwise. I'm not sure if technically, mosquitos can drain enough blood to kill you, but why take the chance?

Just a thought. :-)

Saturday, August 8, 2009 09:12 AM

@Pedinska

Wow, you're on fire. Having read a couple of your later responses, I doubt you'll need the muskol, the body heat alone will kill them. ;-)

Saturday, August 8, 2009 10:27 PM

@Titowan and Pedinska

My sister went tree planting one summer in the BC mountains, and she told me that they used the larger black flies as guard dogs, to keep the grizzlies away.

I'm pretty sure she was joking. No question, they're really bad in that area though. But the mosquitos are worse, those suckers are mean.

I didn't go because, frankly, they like me a lot more than they like her - I'd never have survived a summer like that.
