Mrs Hag? Not sure how I should address you, actually. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I agree with your 2nd and 3rd points, but really, the lack of foreign bureaus shouldn't be a factor. It's not like there isn't foreign news for them to look at, or ask questions of. If I can know that Bush was lying when he was trying to link Sadaam and Al-Queda, there's simply no excuse for any news service (or politician) to not know.

I think they're just not motivated to know. They simply seem to lack any real desire to do their jobs.

Glenn, you're totally right

But, as others have pointed out, I'm actually more offended by the fact that Dana didn't seem to feel that pointing out this falsehood was her job. Which, you know, it is. I just don't get how these people sleep at night.

That's amazing

Having seen the image now, that was actually more offensive than I had imagined. I'm waiting for Johnny mac to say this was out of line. I'm not holding my breath though.

Anybody gonna defend this? Pachyderm? Double R? Anybody?

@ Cocktailhag

You might be right, that the coverage would be better if there were foreign bureaus. I'm just feeling cynical and guessing that the news would still follow whatever storylines the publishers have established and not, you know, what's actually happening. Reality just doesn't seem to mean very much to some of these people.

The Secret Service doesn't allow journalists to interview people going to political rallies? Where did you hear that? That's kind of outrageous. What would be the rationale for that?

@ Maureen

I don't think you understand Canada's electoral system that well. Yeah, the conservatives got another minority government, which means they actually have to negotiate things, they just can't lay down the law. The big reason is, they're the only conservative party running in the national election. Every other party is to the left of them, considerably for the most part. That's where the majority of votes were cast, but it got split four different ways.

If the Conservatives (they were Progressive Conservatives back then, the name always killed me) hadn't merged with the Reform Party, they'd have no shot at ever approaching power.

@Cocktailhag

Thanks, I missed that. I'll have to look that up. If the press had any intestinal fortitude, they'd fight that. There's no reason for it I can think of that would stand up in court.

Not that the MSM would fight something like that. I mean, it doesn't prevent copy from being written, so what do they care?

@humourless, pompous liberal

Given that the black population in Norway is about 10%, that's perhaps not that surprising. Nice red herring, by the way.

I wish him well

I have to many good memories about his work to wish him otherwise. One of the great cartoonists of all time, I think.

If Ignatieff wanted to run for the Conservatives, I suspect more Canadians would find him acceptable then the current PM, Stephen Harper (the space-alien android). He's not really a Liberal though, whether he's in that party or not.

Dion is a very bright, very passionate man who's been labeled boring, I suspect at least in part because his English isn't very good. It's difficult to get behind someone when you can't understand them.

I suspect most Canadians don't think Canada is that boring, and would rather that most countries think it is. Considering how much damage America could do to it if Americans realized it was there, I suspect slipping under the radar is the safest course.

@Faulkner

Actually, Delusional is doing exactly what he wants - you're wasting time responding to him. Much as I am writing about that, but I can't sleep anyway. He's just a brain drain device.

Of course there are standards

Does it make it to deadline? Will people read it? That seems to be about the limit, as far as I can tell. Yes Glenn, you're right, this isn't the way it should be done. To quote, "but I don’t give a f$^% who they screwin’ in private

I wanna know who they screwin’ in public."

That space and energy would have been better spent exploring the policies of the candidates, or even why, or why not, they're not suited for the job. Unless Cindy McCain has strong influences that actually matter, that might shape the policies of her husband, I don't really care.

That's the post that needed writing. I hope people pay attention.

To answer Joan's question

Yeah, I think he is. At least, that's what he said at the debate. While he didn't seem to want to claim some of the more violent statements, he's done nothing about the stuff his running mate has been saying, so I think he's got to take ownership of the entire package.

Sherrie, that beat-down was awesome. I'll bet RR doesn't want to have anything to do with answering that, and why would he? He's not real big on answers anyway.

Ignore what the trolls will say

The reason to vote early is to try and make sure, as much as possible, that they don't steal the vote. That's the issue, more than anything else. Get them in and counted.

A bit late

I think the comments by Powell were a bit late, but were very well said. It's one of the best endorsements I've heard, in particular the points that Glenn is writing about. That said, whether you think Powell is a war criminal, a sell-out, whatever, there's no doubt in my mind that a lot of soft Republicans will at least consider what he says. I think many military families will consider what he says. The endorsement is useful for that alone, if nothing else.

Oh, and to the people saying "well, of course the black guy is gonna endorse the white guy?" Some other day, when I feel like writing more, or have more time, I'll really tell you what's wrong with that argument. For now, I'll just thank you for my daily dose of racist speak, you racists.

Ta.
