That's what prostitution is, and that's my problem with it. It's a huge violation of a person's dignity, totally incomparable with any other kind of "work", and difficult to argue that anybody really chooses it freely.

LOL, I think being forced to piss in a cup in front of an observer to prove that you are not an apostate of the de facto state religion is a huge violation of a person's dignity.

But I'll bet you would do it to keep your obviously cushy job.

It's all a matter of perspective..

Spend August as a roofer doing hot tar roofs in South Georgia and get back to me about nasty jobs

Did you ever consider prostituting yourself sexually to men instead of the dangerous work of construction? Why not, if it's so benign?

Could it be because I strongly resemble Homer Simpson and I'm not gay?

How about this: I think neither of them is ‘too’ greedy. Please use your definition to objectively demonstrate that you opinion is correct and mine is incorrect.”

Umm..let's see.. The robber deliberately performs the ultimate harm on the clerk, depriving them of life.

    G=DH

So, if we plug in the numbers of deliberate and harm both would be a 10 on a 0 to 10 scale.

We can fairly safely assume that the clerk has not murdered anyone so they have not implied consent to being murdered.

So the greed quotient equals 10*10 or 100, the maximum possible.

  • As far as looks are concerned -- I don't think that one has to be exceptionally attractive to be a prostitute.

    You're right for females..

Male prostitutes on the other hand are almost uniformly young and attractive. Gay men are even more appearance obsessed than are straight men.

You have a point about desire, I have to admit.

When I was young enough, being a prostitute never even occurred to me, I knew female prostitutes existed but had no clue of male ones.

A lot of prostitution is in being an actor and I'm a very poor actor, wear my heart on my sleeve.

I wasn't trying to imply that prostitution is not an unpleasant and sometimes dangerous job, just trying to point out that there are plenty of unpleasant and dangerous jobs out there that no one even would consider making illegal because they are unpleasant and dangerous.

  • In my opinion, taking someone’s life doesn’t rate a 10, the robber’s score is not the maximum

OK, then in your opinion what does rate a 10?

Eating someone's child alive in front of them?

    Without salt?

Cut off a joint at at time with a red hot knife to cauterize the wound and you could keep them alive for quite a few joints.

    Might hurt a bit though.

The whole point of my definition is that it changes the entire view of greed, from simply wanting things to how one goes about getting the things one wants. It introduces the concept of ethics to the definition of greed. Is that a bad thing?

Perhaps the word greed should simply be stricken from the dictionaries if it is impossible to define, eh?

  • You're making me wish for a spleef about now, somewhat less metaphorically.

I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or an insult. :-)

  • As far as the first, wouldn’t it be easier to make a new word, rather than trying to redefine something that is very well defined ?

[Read the article: Joe Klein rewrites his role in the 1990s]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It isn't very well defined, which is exactly my point.

You make a good point, my definition isn't completely objective, however it is considerably more objective than the dictionary definitions in that it attempts to put some quantifiable criteria in the definition (harm, deliberate).

When you stop and think about it there is very little that is completely objective in human affairs.

So I will continue to place character and psychological stability at the top of my thinking when I have to make a voting decision because I refuse to buy the argument that is sometimes placed on these threads that all of Washington on both sides are corrupt and only care about building power and choose greed and ego over benefiting the needy or America.

I'm not sure that anyone has made the argument that *all* politicians in DC only care about power.

My argument is basically that the great majority of politicians in DC are corrupt and/or pig ignorant. More than enough so that the decent ones have very little chance of accomplishing anything truly productive.

Not really trying to badger you but you have twice dodged my question regarding what you think of Obama the candidate wishing to give Obama the teen/young adult either a prison term or forced "treatment" and a police record that would bar him forever from seeking the presidency. I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts on the matter because I frankly see him as extremely hypocritical on this issue.

Pass that baby around, though, mister.

Don't bogart that joint, my friend..

I take it from your handle and request then that you are a PDA (polydrug abuser)? ;-)

Never did care much for alcohol, my faves were Owsley and Michoacan.

And actually I look more like Homer Simpson than Hank Hill :->

Most people work for money. I suspect prostitutes are no different and pretended enthusiasm for sex is part of the job. For some strange reason, men don't like to admit this. Nor do they seem to like to admit that many women enter this profession in the first place because they were abused as children.

I addressed that point when I said that I'm a poor actor..

Of course acting is part of the job, acting is a big part of any job that involves dealing with the public. Wait staff that makes the great majority of their income on tips must be able to act like they're having a good time serving surly, unappreciative people or they aren't going to get any tip. The customer complaint taker must act like they agree with the irate customer when what they really want to do is tell them to shut the phuck up and quit whining.

And so on and so on.

Girls and boys alike are abused as children, often there doesn't seem to be much done to stop it either. What do you recommend to solve this problem?
