Should the U.S. government really be in the business of encouraging women to have babies?

Never. We could stop having children for a decade and the world would still be grossly overpopulated.

Like this is news.

It has probably been fifteen years since there was the slightest bit of journalistic independence in television or radio news. Even NPR, with it's right wing triumvirate of Cokie Roberts, Mara Liarson and Juan Williams, no longer "speaks truth to power."

Except for most of Frontline and various independent public radio programs, the news in this country, print and broadcast, is no longer a public advocate.

It is an economic fact that consumption from people at this income level . . .

. . . does little to stimulate the economy. The ripple effect of a few thousand people spending an extra $500,000.00 a year is much less than the impact 30 million household able to spend an extra $10,000.00.

Geithner is neither stupid nor in over his head.

Geithner owes his true allegiance to the financial class and has little interest in the health of the nation as a whole. He does not really want to increase regulation or oversight because he knows it will make it more difficult to drop back into a senior position with Goldman's once he's done in 18-months or so.

Original article: Quote of the day

I wouldn't think of it, since you are, as a Canadian, obviously much better informed . . .

. . . than Laffer.

Call me stupid, but... isn't Medicare a government program?

-- North of the 49th

Medicaid and Medicare are both run by the federal and state governments, and should serve as models of a government option national health care scheme.

A discredited economist brought to you by the Party of No.

Exactly.

Wealthy people like the hypothetical Goldman Sachs employees tend to already have enough money to pay for mortgages and accounts flush with cash for their purchases, so they tend to take windfalls like a 500,000 bonus and put it back into the magic imaginary money-machine called the stock market, which doesn't stimulate the economy. -- as is

The marginal utility of an extra $500K to someone already wealthy is small. This is why raising the tax rate 5% on someone making $1M a year or more has next to no affect on his consumption.

Also, Cestmoi123 seems to think that all 10,000 Goldmans employees are getting $500K bonuses. Hardly. The "backroom" folks in investment banks make squat compared to the partners or senior salespeople. The lion's share of these bonuses will be going to people who already have six and seven figure incomes and, therefore, will have only a marginal impact on even the local economy.

No. Actually . . .

. . . I abhor mixed martial arts period. Boneheaded physical violence at its worst.

The liberals on this site must be so disgusted by the fact that women do MMA. I wonder if Joan Walsh will go to this fight?-- LuchAAA

She's pretty now. She won't be in another year.

Warning: Non-sequitur alert!

It is only because his current boss(es) are as ignorant as to the causes of this mess as he is (they are Keynesians to a T) (sic) that he is still employed. CW -- Bboilerman

What the hell does Keynes have to do with causing or fixing our financial mess? In any case, there certainly were no Keynesians in the previous administration and I really don't see any very serious disciples in the Obama administration.

Is Nora Ephron the foodiest filmmaker?

I don't know about that. But she is certainly one of the worst film makers working today.

Hey, rightwing dipshits!

I'll see you two freed hostages with no pre-conditions and raise you one Iran-Contra scandal.

Assholes.

I've written this here more than once.

The Atlantic, like the once great New Republic, is barely worth the paper it is printed on. Flanagan, Sullivan, Hitchens, Todd, O'Rourke - what a collection of clowns.

Original article: Isakson irked

This would be a good item for an annual award that Salon . . .

. . . could give to the politician with the weakest spine. The only problem would be sifting through the thousands of choices. And, with Pelosi and Reid in the "leadership" of Congress, it certainly wouldn't need to be limited to Rethugs.

Has anyone any idea where one can buy a latex rubber spine model I think Salon or someone ought to get a presentation model to give to the latest Republican to earn it - the "order of the rubber spine." -- MacK.

Original article: The real guitar heroes

Seconded.

Oh really? Um, Jack White is a "guitar hero"? When the hell did THAT happen? LOL -- ZaZaCat

Except for the Raconteurs hit from two years ago, the appeal of anything Jack White does escapes me. His music is bombastic, he's strictly a journeyman guitar player, and he has an annoying voice. Hell, Paul McCartney's a better guitar player than the Edge or White, and his primary instrument has always been the bass.

I'm sure most of us could list at least a half dozen more interesting guitar players than either White or the Edge.

Are we allowed to nominate . . .

. . . people as long as their over 65? If so, I know a number of people in Congress on both sides of the aisle that should be reviewed by the panel.

Oh. You mean they have to be gravely ill and not just useless? Crap!

Monday, August 17, 2009 10:22 AM

On the contrary. The article and poll are very meaningful.

A much better poll... ...Would be to ask "Do you know what the stimulus money is being used for". I would be a clear majority would respond "I'm not really sure", thus proving the results of the poll described in this article meaningless.

-- wolfmason

Though only meaningful, once again, for illustrating what idiots most Americans are.

I have no idea if she's packing extra . . .
