Reagan didn't stick the first shiv into the labor movement, but he held the stake while big business swung the mallet that drove it home.
My grandmother, whose first husband was shot in the head for becoming a labor activist after being a "strike-breaker" (a thug who intimidates and extorts strikers), never forgave and never forgot for a minute just what Reagan's presidency meant.
As charming, charismatic, influential or likable as Reagan was, he was and always will be in my mind on the wrong side of the struggles of the working man and woman.
His enduring legacy in my mind will always be conflated with the violence done against laborers, and it is no coincidence that many of the ugliest aspects of the class disputes in America gained traction and legitimacy during his tenure: the war on the middle-class, the continued and accelerated imprisonment and disenfranchisement of minorities, the importation of illegal immigrants and the exportation of jobs, and the xenophobic "anti-immigrant" movement of the now on the right.
That said, I have little love for the war-avoiding, twice married purveyor of manly patriotic sacrifice and family values.
Anyone who doesn't come out with full-throated support of Likud and its perpetual wars might have the advantage of appearing sane.
Hopefully Americans, especially "low-information" and lower-middle class families (eg, those who actually serve in the military) are now smart enough to see through Joe LIEberman and his unswerving traitorous fealty to Tel-Aviv.
Hopefully, this will be a way in to start to go after McCain for his association with Hagee, chosen specifically to appeal to American evangelical Zionists.
Yep, that's our Bush. Man of the people. Why, right now I want to have a beer with him.
Nope, nothing elitist of out of touch about him!
How did he do on the pool table? Inquiring minds want to know.
Why do you hate the Jews so much?
Human garbage scumbag John Hagee apologizes to "apostate church", still hasn't apologized for blaming gays for Katrina and secularism for 9/11.
See you in hell, Hagee!
Olbermann calls Bush and war criminal on national TV.
NARAL is endorsing the winner. Clinton lost. End of story.
Hillary Clinton dropped out, we wouldn't be having this debate.
Obama is the winner, Clinton is the runner-up. Maybe if she was out in April, she would have a chance to be on the ticket.
I started in on a half-witted defense of polygamy, then decided it was a too complex issue for a comment here and saved it off as a draft on my blogger account.
Anyway, it feels better than usual today to be a Californian (that said, I should be getting a call from the FTB to make me feel not-so-good any minute now!).
Glenn, I personally hope that someday we'll all live in a country that doesn't penalize its citizens for their sexual orientation.
"THE JEW IS USING THE BLACK MAN FOR MUSCLE, WHACHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT, WHITEY?"
If by "taking great pains to hide" Obama's 'muslim roots' you mean talking openly about it in both of his books, then sure. Otherwise, you got me on that one.
You are right, however. Jews are not a united voting bloc (although overwhelmingly liberal). Greenwald points this out again and again. The problem is that the loudest voices get heard the most, whether it is the voices who shout anti-Sematism at the slightest criticism of some Israeli policies, or the idiots spreading the "Obama is a muslim" swift-boat attack.
Hopefully Obama will continue to deftly parry these attacks, but as we saw in West Virginia, it is impossible to sway everyone with reason and fact.
Link to Greenwald in sig.
Representative Dan Lungren (R-CA) is on TV spouting the tired pony of FISA right now (C-SPAN).
It would have been nice if, like Glenn Greenwald, Salon.com was talking about this two months ago instead of their futile war against Barack Obama.
Made Keith Olbermann's "Worst Persons" list today for the reason cited in Glenn's post today.
Clearly, someone at Countdown, perhaps KO himself, has been following GG as this is not the first time UT has been cited on the programme.
Incidentally, I'm waiting for someone to tell me how the caste, male dominated society of Tibet is better or worse than DPRC. That said, I agree with a boycott on China for all the reasons cited by LWM plus the fact that China enables US companies an end-run around labor rights fought for and won by my ancestors.
Because it is true. Absolutely true, undeniably true.. Our government is out of control, corrupt and criminal and it has been for decades.
We armed and trained Osama bin Laden. No one denies this. We gave Sadam the gun and the bullet but when he pulled the trigger on the Kurds, it wasn't our fault. Bullshit. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
Every last one of the people who died on 9/11, there is blood on the hands of the government, just as the blood of every soldier, civilian, child, woman, freedom fighter, everyone in the wrong place at the wrong time who got blown to bits.. that's on Cheney's hands. On Clinton's. Bush's. Sure, even Obama's.
The difference between Hagee and Wright is that while they both say that there are consequences for our actions, Wright is correct in what the cause and effect is; Hagee blames it on secularism, homosexuality, catholicism, insufficient support of Zionism. He blames all the wrong things, and his God is a personal God, who interferes directly with our lives when we let him down.
His is the God that told the Jews to kill every last man, woman and child of Canaan.
Wright knows that we are to pay for our own mistakes on their own terms. What you sow in the Spring so shall you reap in come the Fall.
Wright is right. God damn America!
Go go gadget Operation Chaos! Welcome the Oxycontin worshipping ditto-jerks to feign support for Queen Clinton!..
