  • A quick gripe on usage, and a slightly longer gripe on presumption

    [Read the article: Space balls]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm not sure one can attack a television show "ad hominem."

Certainly, we could be talking about "House" or "CSI: Miami" instead of "Grey's Anatomy." All three fail to meet the criteria of being a "hominem" toward which your "ad hominem" attack can be flung.

Second, I believe Ronald D. Moore has made it clear that his personal views on and current events are not broadcast in the show, nor does the show try to take and pro or con views, and perhaps do this to a greater degree than David Simon and Ed Burns do with the Wire.

But there are certain people who, as mentioned downthread, will look at a paint spot and see the Virgin Mary, and there are some who will see a beast with seven cocks. When Clinton was being hounded by the Star office, many progressives saw Republican conspiracies at every turn. Bill O'Reilly sees a secular plan to destroy America under every log. I see Ronald D. Moore as being very even handed, and I try to keep an open mind to that aim myself.

I do not believe the show has an agenda, however I believe that people who are critical of it much in the same way President Bush says it is "wrong to think" do have an agenda. But if partisanship is now drawn on the line of living an examined life versus blissful, willful ignorance then color me partisan!

  • There the frak are the Wire nominations?

    [Read the article: The Fix]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Are you serious? No nominations for "The Wire"? Best Drama? Best actor in a drama (pick one)?

What about Battlestar Galactica? No nod to Katee Sackhoff or Michael Hogan?

What the hell is wrong with the HFPA? Forget the conspiracies, Mel, its not the Jews that control Hollywood, its idiots.

  • Whitewashing/Bluewashing

[Read the article: Maya in the Thunderdome]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't think Dr. Canuto is attempting to whitewash Mayan history, rather shed light on Gibson's more egregious flights of fancy. In this case, Gibson is again using fictionalized drama purporting to have a degree of historical accuracy to forward his own agenda. I agree that the movie is fiction, and Canuto himself acknowledges this in the article -- however any attempt to shed light on a little understood subject should not be met with the kind of skepticism some seem to have in other letters regarding the article. Are we so enamored with today's culture of "willful ignorance" as to second guess every editorial purporting to educate? A little knowledge is a good thing in a country where the best description of the difference between the Sunni and Shi'ite comes from a basic cable comedy variety program, although we have been at war with Iraq for 3 and a half years.

  • Holy Crap!

Paul McCartney.. Sir Paul McCartney took LSD?

Hold on, I must gasp for air.. the next one is a doozey.. I can't barely bring myself to say it..

    ..and he smokes pot??

Now, clearly Lindsey Lohan is a moron, and I have a sinking suspicion that she is a straw zombie. Here is a negative argument for drug abuse.

But Paul McCartney can take fistfulls of crack and heroin for all I care. His contribution to music, and culture, is nearly immeasurable.

  • Sometimes..

[Read the article: This Modern World]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I wonder why people thing liberals are elitist snobs, then I read the letters section week after week for "This Modern World" and I get a glimmer of insight into the mental state of Limbaugh listeners.

Its a comic strip, not high concept art. And really, folks, sometimes Gary Trudeau and Berkeley Breathed can lay it on a little thick. Sometimes, their stuff is damned hard to glean any meaning from at all.

If I want high concept, I'll go to the comic book store and pick up the latest Grant Morrison screed.

  • Of course raw milk is unsafe..

[Read the article: The udder truth]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

..From industrial Matrix cows. Cattle that wade around in their own waste, or are hooked up to machines all day to milk them, who have no natural immunity, and are fed an unnatural gruel of tallow, grain and chemicals.

But raw milk, the real deal, from clean cows (you know, the kind they show on those commercials).. that's fine.

The problem is, the government doesn't want anyone to farm or manage livestock in a rational, safe manner. ADM, ConAgra and General Mills write all the USDA legislation now, and they do not have our best interests at heart.

So I say revolt! Unplug! Get off of the Matrix! Burn down the feedlot (really, please do, someone). Do it in the name of "biosecurity!"

  • 100% recovered from my Christianity

[Read the article: Why I had to quit the John Edwards campaign]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Upthread several people posit what might the response had been if the same invective were layed out in a blog against gays or a racial type. I'm here to say, its not the same. Christianity is a choice. Now that I am fully recovered from my Christianity, I can look back on my wicked Christian ways and see it for what it was: misguided self-delusion.

  • I see the bait, like a delicious shiny apple

[Read the article: Ann Coulter on John Edwards: "Faggot"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Far be it for anyone to suggest that it is unfortunate that Ann Coulter wasn't in the company of our Vice President and a little closer to the suicide bomber. That would certainly be a reprehensible thought. Luckily we are above such vile, base ideas being enlightened progressives. Pardon me, I must go find some blood pressure medication.

Good day gentle sirs and ladies!
