AIM

It's not surprising that some people "chafe" when Glenn "strays" from what they've come to expect of him. The minute he addresses the issue of media bias or the failed media, instead of the legal issues that they are concerned with, they get all huffy. Glenn has been concentrating on this for much less time than that. The right has been complaining about a perceived bias in the media for almost 30 years and Reed Irviine started it all back in 1969. The difference is that Glenn and others would prefer the news was as free from bias as possible. The right has always been concerned with injecting a right wing bias where there should be no biias of any kind.

Accuracy In Media (AIM) is an American organization which monitors the news media in the United States. Founded in 1969 by Reed Irvine, at the time an economist with the Federal Reserve, AIM describes itself as "a non-profit, grassroots citizens watchdog of the news media that critiques botched and bungled news stories and sets the record straight on important issues that have received slanted coverage".

It commonly attacks what it sees as liberal bias in the media. Despite AIM's claim of political neutrality, some media watchdog groups, including self-described "progressive group" Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, refer to it as a conservative organization.

AIM maintains many ties to conservative groups and is known for criticizing journalists with accusations of leftist bias, but rarely (if ever) levels claims of conservative bias against reporters or news organizations. Its positions on issues would also usually be classified as conservative: AIM editorialized in support of Nicaraguan Contra leaders such as José Francisco Cardenal. It also supported the Committee for a Free Afghanistan, a US group that backed Islamic fundamentalist Afghans who fought the Soviet invasion. Also supported are Augusto Pinochet, who was called a savior of Chile, and the group often quotes from The Epoch Times, a group that publishes information on Chinese human rights abuses.

AIM was founded by Reed Irvine in 1969, when Irvine called for sedition charges to be brought against Students for a Democratic Society, the Black Panthers and the Progressive Labor Party, arguing, "If you're going to halt treason, you've got to do it while it's small." [Village Voice, January 21, 1986]

In the 1970s, Irvine endeared himself to the New Right by alleging that the corporate media were a propaganda tool for the Soviet KGB and Fidel Castro. In 1982, AIM attacked New York Times reporter Raymond Bonner for his reports (later proven accurate--see Extra!, January/February 1993) about the El Mozote massacre. Along with the Wall Street Journal editorial page, AIM succeeded in pressing the Times to pull Bonner from his Salvadoran beat.

Irvine later called for napalm to be used against FMLN guerrillas in El Salvador. (AIM Report, March 1990). During the Gulf War, he encouraged a nuclear strike against Iraq. [Seattle Times, January 16, 1991]

With the end of the Cold War, AIM now assails environmentalists as the "infiltrators" of the media establishment. Critical reports about industries that fund AIM--such as chemical and oil interests--ara a frequent target of AIM critiques.

During the Clinton era, alleged conspiracies related to the Democratic president were a frequent topic in AIM's work--particularly the notion that Vince Foster was not a suicide but a victim of foul play. AIM charged that Republicans, including independent counsel Kenneth Starr, were somehow complicit in covering up Clinton's plots; discussing Hillary Rodham Clinton's notion of a "vast right-wing conspiracy," Irvine retorted that "the only conspiracy I knew of was the conspiracy of the Republican leadership to protect Bill Clinton." [AIM Report, February 1998]

AIM has been criticized as a censorious group eager to silence voices it disagrees with and disdainful of the First Amendment. The group for a time offered as a donation premium Target America, written by AIM board member James L. Tyson, a book advocating that government "ombudsmen" police major-network newscasts for "accuracy" and "fairness".

There is more to it...

The reason people are so disgusted by media is because they have socialized themselves into the establishment, the business model has moved away from investigative journalism, and the result is highly paid and preening parrots more interested in being liked and accepted. Where the invetigative axe falls, I wouldn't care, partisan or not.

I agree with this but there is more to it. I think you have to consider that 30 years of the media being bullied and manipulated and bought and paid for by an elaborate right wing money machine has certainly not made it less partisan and it is partisan to the right and a right that does not reflect the majority opinion of the country the media is supposed to serve.

Jestaplero's criticisms were not offensive and abusive and he is a big fan of Glenn's but I think he's off base.

Bebop

I'm not loud. I'm just hard of hearing. Loud rock and roll for too many years. Did you just call me fat!?

Holly... "There is no way anyone could have mistakenly connected your letter and hers"

His.

I cut Jestaplero some serious slack. I think he's wrong, but his opinion matters and is worth consideration.

An indie rocker turned prosecutor?" WTF!?

Che... But is the media "supposed to serve" that majority opinion?

I knew that was trouble after I hit the publish button.

No. The media should do what we all want it to do, (and I don't mean the clowns on the right). It would be nice if the media reported the facts for a change. Like the fact that most people in this country want a system of national health care. I'll not hold my breath. I'll strangle the pigs on the right first. Let them hold their breath. :-} As long as they can.
