Professional
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The "Professional" is supposed to make it ok? People complain about running the score up in college football all the time and no-one argues that it is indeed running up the score. You can make all the excuses you want, but it has been convention in the NFL that you don't do this. Probably in part because people know that eventually you'll be the underdog again. Bellecheck doesn't care. He's been screwed a number of times in his career and now that he's been caught cheating he's going to show them all! They'll rue the day and other vengeful cliches. Do you really think the other teams that were mentioned that had large margins of victory couldn't have had bigger ones?
If you're up 42 to 10 and at 4th and one at the Buffalo 10 in the third quarter, you kick the fg. But how did they get to 4th and 1 on the 10? Did they run the ball and run out the clock or did they try to score as hard as they could and stall. Something tells me it is the latter. Once you have the game in hand if you move to a time management game and run out the clock you aren't giving up, you're playing smart. The way the Pats are playing, they're trying to make a statement. What's the statement? "You were mean to me so now you'll pay!"
Yeah, that's professional.

Cheating
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You're right W.E.S., they probably weren't winning by 40 from that videotape. It is most likely the other ways they're cheating.

sgaana
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I already said what they should do. Put in your backup earlier, run the ball more, go for clock management. None of that shows up in the long term stats the way running up the score does and that's why the Pats are doing it.
And again, you don't say they're not doing it, you just question why it is bad. I say it is bad for the reasons they seem to be doing it.
They may be a good team, they may even be the best playing right now, but you have to admit that playing in a division where no other team hits 500 has to help. They've had an incredibly weak schedule and the 2 teams they played (Colts and Cowboys) that were playing at a similar level had a good shot at beating them until very late in the games.

Buffalo
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Trying to score when you're blown out is essentially extra practice for next week. It is also just what you do, you keep trying until the game is over. Just like it is accepted convention that when you're blowing out an opponant you put in your backup, you go for clock control more than you try to score, etc...
If all of you that are defending the Pats running up the score are trying to say that accepted convention and traditional practice are wrong, then say that and make sure to mention why it is ok to risk getting your qb hurt and if you'll still think it is fine when the Pats are on the receiving end of a 55-3 drubbing.

W.E.S.
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Buddy Ryan, ah yes, that model of mental stability. Remember when his career was on the downslide and he punched another coach during a game? A coach on his own team? Ah, good times, good times.
And having your defense play all out is different from having your offense play all out. Unless you count the "prevent" defense as some might. Having your defense play hard ensures the offense doesn't have to. And again, traditionally that's the way it works. If you think that all the things that traditionally make up "good sportsmanship" are bunk, come right out and say so.
