  • Stakes are everything

By stating "stakes are everything" and following it up with the paragraphs you do, you're saying "stakes don't really mean anything". Just the kind of clarity we've come to expect here. Of course stakes aren't everything otherswise the "Baltimore-Pittsburgh game is pretty intriguing, and so are Green Bay-Kansas City, Carolina-Tennessee, Jacksonville-New Orleans and Denver-Detroit" games you mention would indeed be far more interesting than this one. And if stakes were everything no-one would ever watch a regular season baseball game and we know how you love your baseball.

As far as "The Pats were accused of running up the score, which is just stupid, these people being professionals and all, but they probably weren't so much rubbing it in to Washington as flexing their muscles for Indy's benefit." goes, They probably were running up the score as they've been trying to do in every game this season. Bellicheck was caught cheating earlier this season and may still be cheating as there were other suspicious events that haven't been sorted out yet, which is just stupid, these people being professionals and all, but they did get caught on one of their cheating tactics. Bellicheck is now coaching with the emotional professionalism of a grumpy 10 year old. And don't think he's not capable of it, he's done similar things before, like not shaking the opposing coach's hand after losing. The Jets know all about what a whiny, unprofessional little jackass he can be. Personally, I hope it costs him the game this weekend.

If any team is going to be the second to post an undefeated season this year, I'm hoping it'll be the Colts. It'd suck for the team to notch that achievement to be the one that started the season with a cheating scandal. There's still a ton of people that think they're cheaters and that'd follow this accomplishment too.

  • Idiot Governor

Part of the problem is undoubtedly the idiot they currently have as governor in GA. I heard him talking about this on NPR and he stated that he didn't think the endangered species act was intended to provide resources for animals over the needs of humans. Of course, this is exactly what the endangered species act is for. It was passed to prevent human expansion and resource use from destroying entire species of animals. His kind of interpretation is just what you can expect from the modern no-nothing party: Republicans.

  • 4th Down

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Previously, you'd written about how NFL teams should attempt to convert 4th down more frequently, especially when in the area of the field where it is too long for a FG yet too short for a punt. The Packers converted 2 4th downs this weekend even when they had over 3 yards to get a 1st down. The Vikings attempeted 3 4th down conversions, but failed on all three. Of course, they were attempting them more from desperation while the Packers chose when to make their attempts.

Nothing to say about this? Leaving it to the letters column writers to bring it up? Saving it for a later column?

    Thy name is hyperbole.

Either you're saying it for the attention or you're a rabid Pats fan or you're a fool. None of these options reflects well on you.

  • Pats

There've been arguments here and elsewhere about whether the Pats are "running up the score". Use those other great teams as comparison points. Likely quite a few of them could have beaten other teams by this kind of margin, but they didn't. At a certain point you're going for humiliation and risking your player's health to do it. That's where the Pats are now. Bellicheck is a childish man who feels he's been slighted too often and now that he's been caught cheating, he's going to take it out on the world.

Also please note: he's been CAUGHT cheating, not just accused of it. There are quite a few other football fans I know of that are pretty sure he's still cheating in other ways that had been alluded to in previous games, but not proven the way the taping is. This year, if not others, is tainted for the Pats and that's part of what all the running up the score is about, they're trying to wash that away. It won't work. Even Don Shula thinks this season is tainted for the Pats and if you don't think he knows what he's talking about, you might as well get the Pats logo tattooed on your forhead 'cause you wouldn't believe anyone has an "objective" opinion if they don't agree with you anyway.

Yep, you can say the defense should play better until you're blue in the face, but it doesn't change the fact that the Pats are running up the score for no purpose other than making a statement/showing off. Saying the defense should play better completely avoids the point that other similarly talented teams over the years have avoided doing this. Honestly, I'd love for teams to absolutely destroy the Pats from now on once their current run of good fortune is over just to show them that what comes around goes around.

Then again, who knows if they are actually that talented or if their cheating is doing the work for them.
