    Anonymous--

We are in the letters thread of a Sports column.

This is true. In part I was responding to a comment that it is never safe to use them. However, I stated with "medical conditions", not "in the hospital". There is a difference there. Since you'd like me to state this more distinctly, under supervision of a doctor, steroids can be given safely to healthy athletes. Better?

You provided 2 links, 1 of which is more testimonials. I'm not looking for more testimonials, I'm looking for scientifically, peer reviewed studies. Many of them. This will let users know what works, what doesn't and what is dangerous, just like with any perscribed medicine (when done properly).

If that’s what you’re saying, please say it. I’m not psychic.

I'd said in my original post "If administered by responsble doctors". My apologies if you somehow construed that to mean "over the counter" or "freely available to kids all across the land". I'm not sure how you could make that mistake, but stranger things have happened.

    TomG76--

Would only team doctors of professional sports teams be able to prescribe these now legal, controlled drugs?

    Yes

Why can't my family doctor, or my orthopedist prescribe the drugs for my son or daughter?

That'd be a further discussion, but as they'd still be growing and maturing, they should avoid interfering with that process. Furthermore, if you felt strongly that they should be allowed, you'd need additional medical studies as medicines and treatments often affect children differently than adults. Adult professional athletes can start to use them because it would be an informed decision and a part of their jobs. Children in our culture are generally thought to be less capable of making these same decisions. You'd also want to restrict it from children for the same reason we restrict alcohol.

Doctors enjoy being paid for visits and as a bonus the local high school gets a better football team

Many people enjoy many things that aren't necessarily good for those around them. The local high school may get a better football team. We don't yet know what drugs or medicines would benefit adult athletes, let alone young amatures.

The kids would go to the doctor's office instead of the shady gym.

This is true and saftey is one of the primary reasons I favor the legalizations I do. Besides ensuring they're actually getting what they think, there's a doctor there in case something goes wrong and to help deal with any effects.

The proper thing to do, given the patterns of mis-information and lying, is to sit each of them down before the committee and as soon as one tries one of these "corn flakes" claims, you have the Sgt. At Arms haul them away for contempt and let them stew while trying to decide if they'll answer. Hell, whenever one contradicts the other, hold both in contempt and start perjury proceedings against both.

It is WRONG and IMMORAL to give steroids to healthy athletes.

    Why?

What is wrong about it? Healthy athletes are supposedly already doing it, this way it would just be safer. Healthy athletes train, exercise, use pain killers, take vitamin and other "health" suppliments, eat specific foods, etc... How is this really all that different?

What is immoral about it? Once you get into questions of "morality", you're really treading a razor's edge. Is drinking immoral? What about taking pain killers? Aspirin? When you start simply declaring the "immorality" of an act, you're essentially saying you don't like it and others should acceed to your wishes. Please give some reasons.
