First use
[Read the article: Attacks on civilians, torture and lawless detentions]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]American doctrine has always been response, not first use. First use may have been feared by others that didn't believe us and we may have even encouraged such fears, but it has not been offical doctrine.
You stated earlier that
US nuclear weapons were built to counter Soviet conventional forces.
Not true. The original development was in response to the Nazis
and used against the Japanese. After the war the primary development was done as a deterrant when the Soviets got the bomb. While some, like battlefield nukes, could be used against conventional forces or against close range installations, this does not imply first use.
"Bunker Buster" nukes were primarily intended for use against hardened nuclear launch sites against other hardened positions, but again doesn't imply first use.
The US was the first to acquire nuclear weapons, has always had the largest warhead stockpile
While it is true that we've always has the largest stockpile, intelligence estimates for decades misinterpreted how large the Soviet stockpiles were. There were times we believed we were outgunned. And again, deterrance does not mean first use. One primary justification for having such a large stockpile was that we wanted to have the capacity to retaliate even after being hit with a large first strike.

As with all literature
[Read the article: Newt's novel ideas]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Some Alternate History novels are good, others are crap. These are crap. Poorly written and heavy handed, they can be ignored if you're interested in Alternate History. There's plenty out there that's good, go review some of that. I'm sure the only reason this got an article was because of Gingritch attaching his name to it, but most likely he's contributed an idea or two at most and possibly just lends his name to increase sales.

Anonymous
[Read the article: Stalking Dr. House]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Note the naysayers are Anonymous both times. Probably the same guy. You don't understand how this got on here with the hard news? Do you understand what a "newspaper" is? What a "Human Interest" story is? Did you notice it was in the "Life" section, not the "News" section? Please, go back to grade school and try to pay attention this time.
As for the article being "cringe-inducing", no specifics, huh? Couldn't even work your feeble brain up to the point where you could point out an example? The article was a good one, readable, approachable and concise.

Nicely done, King
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As far as I'm concerned, Bob Uecker can stay with the self-deprecating schtick. Everybody else, cut it out.
Followed by
I don't think the Senators are tough enough to beat the Ducks, but what do I know, and the teams look pretty evenly matched
Comedy genius, right there.

How dare they!
[Read the article: It's hard to be a dude these days]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]women -- the gatekeepers of sexuality -- have carelessly thrown their legs wide open, offering free entry to any and every guy who crosses their path
To think that this kind of thing would happen under our noble president LBJ! I'm telling you, this Rock & Roll music will be the death of us all! Damn kids have nothing better to do than smoke their "happy weed", protest the war and have sex. What is wrong with them?
As far as men spending tons of time on their appearance and clothing, who knew such a thing could happen under Prime Minister Harold Wilson? The shame! "Mod" indeed. Mark my words, by the time the 1970s get here, civilization as we know it will be destroyed and we'll all be living in caves!

Solution
[Read the article: Suing paycheck to paycheck]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Clearly, every woman and minority should sue after every paycheck, just in case. That's what the Supreme Court seems to be suggesting. If some enterprising lawyers can start taking these cases based on a % of winnings/pro bono, that should get the court to reverse itself pretty quickly. Hell, companies that have to defend against these would find themselves begging the Supreme Court to hear the cases. The Supreme Court would have no choice but to reverse itself or be swamped.
Scalia and some of the other Right Wing Morons that are currently on the bench have provided ample cause for impeachment in the form of conflict of interest. Congress should start there and worry about dealing with Bush & Cheney in criminal court after their terms.

Abuse
[Read the article: It's hard to be a dude these days]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yes, gagagaga, anonymous speech is important, however like many other things, it can be abused. That's what the Right Wing is all about, abusing liberty to the detriment of others. Those posting as Anonymous here are only doing so because they like posting ugly little ranting screeds without the possibility of being held accountable.

Gutenberg
[Read the article: A margarita made with ethanol]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]1) How much energy it takes to make fuel from corn is still being debated, with some studies showing it takes more and some showing it takes much less. This is not settled and pretending it is is just as dishonest as the people you're railing against.
2) No one alternate fuel needs to provide ALL America's energy needs. No one fuel does it today. There'll be a combination of fuels and conservation that'll allow us to wean ourselves from the current energy sources. Pretending otherwise is a red herring.

Impeachment
[Read the article: OK, but there was no litmus test for janitors, right?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Much as I'd love to see Bush, Cheney, Scallia and a few others impeached, it won't happen until enough Republicans think their best interests lie in impeaching. Without that, it is a quixotic quest at best.

Energy
[Read the article: A margarita made with ethanol]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Real Name -- All I'm saying is that there are scientists that say their calculations show it takes more energy and some scientists that say it takes vastly less. It depends on the factors you count as going toward production and the methods used to get energy back out. There is debate. Someone is likely closer to correct than someone else, but there is actual debate out there on how efficient it'll be on an industrial scale.
Desigirl -- Way to go! Lap up that Fox News soundbite.
Al Gore is currently redoing his entire house to operate on alternate energy, purchasing renewable energy at higher prices and reducing his carbon footprint. You on the other hand are contributing to global warming with all the hot air you're spewing.
