Defense?
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Wes,
Did you watch any of the playoff games so far? It isn't Manning vs. Grossman where they each get the same )-Line, receivers, rbs and face the same defense and then see who can score the most points. There'll be two whole teams out there. Chicago's D is pretty damn good. They have two good running backs, I'd say better than Indy's. Indy's D might be good enough to keep Chicago out of the end zone, then again it might not. Depends on which Chicago O shows up. They've been scoring points in the post season and probably will agianst Indy.
Do I think Indy will win? Yes, hell I hope so, I'm a Packers fan. Do I think Chicago will get blown out? No. They're nowhere near as bad as you seem to think. Grossman played decently in the playoffs so far and that may be all Chicago needs.

Quotes
[Read the article: Several items]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Perhaps you should call the Times and ask the editors what they meant by their statement that GW Bush should be assasinated at the earliest opportunity. Anyone can make up a quote, that's what makes it fun!

Filter
[Read the article: Camille's back!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Please, tell me she's not back as a regular. If she is, can you let us filter the home page by author so I can screen her out? The last thing we need is another Right Winger pretending to be a Liberal so they can tear down progressive ideas in a progressive web site. The only thing about Paglia I've ever seen that shows she's a liberal is that she constantly says "I'm a liberal" before savaging whatever liberal individual or idea she's talking about. Of course if she actually were a liberal, she wouldn't need to say it, she'd actually offer ideas.

Limited
[Read the article: Gathering of the science tribes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What bothers me about the discussions of post-oil technology is that every technology is discussed and usually dismissed as though it'll be the only technology used to replace oil. Can't get enough solar from panels, geothermal isn't practical enough yet, biofuel is "wasting food", doesn't have enough land space, doesn't convert easily, coal is too dirty, nuclear is also a limited resource, etc...
It won't happen like that. All these technologies will be used in concert. Some power will come from wind farms, some from hydro and tidal. Some power will be solar produced locally and some from solar cell farms. Some power will be from cleaner coal, some from various types of biofuel, some from organically released hydrogen, some from improving geothermal. Savings will be made in off-peak use, improved grids, more efficient appliances, cars, etc...
I'm really pleased this conference was so positive 'cause I'm really sick of the doomsayers. We're an adaptive species with a knack for technology and science, we'll do fine. There'll likely be some pain, but we'll do fine.

Doom!
[Read the article: Gathering of the science tribes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Speaking of doomsayers:
anon - We already produce more food than the world can consume, it isn't a question of wasting land or food to produce fuel, it is a question of distribution and cost. At least switching some agricultural production to energy needs may finally get the industrialized nations to stop warping the markets with subsidised farming. Biofuels aren't a scam. As production and other alternate energies increase, use of oil to produce it will drop off precipitously.
jebldmm - from what I understand the tire reef problem was a single attempt to see how well it worked. It failed, possibly becuase of some problems with execution rather than the basic idea itself. Science is about theory and experimentation, this is just one time it didn't work.
suburban warrior - really concerned? What city have you moved to? And see my other post. It won't just be biofuels. If they made a car that ran entirely on solar and was made of recycled steel and plastics, do you still see an end to suburbia?
Think of the difference in how we live now from just 20 years ago. From 40 years ago, 60, 80, 100. Any one of these jumps is back to a world where the future of just 20 years away is almost unimaginable. Think of what we'll achieve in the next 20. Well, at least what those of us who don't sit around all day crying "DOOOOOOOOM" will achieve.

Oh goody
[Read the article: Can Mike Huckabee out-charm the GOP big three?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The famous traitor Grover Norquest has approved him? By all means elect the man. After all, Norquest has declared he wants to destroy the American government ("Drown it in a bathtub", I believe were his precise words.) A true conservative, he's dedicated to the destruction of America for his own profit and if Huckabee is alright by him, how can Huckabee be bad?

Forced divestiture
[Read the article: Halliburton: We're going to Dubai-land!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After the uproar caused by Dubai Ports World trying to purchase the rights to run American ports, perhaps Haliburton will be forced to give up KBR under less than favorable terms. Perhaps they're counting on this, thinking they can portray the business as more desireable than it is and they're only getting rid of it because they have to. Also, is it possible that if they're forced to rid themselves of the company they can use the conditions of divestment to claim some kind of greater return to lower their tax burden or claim some kind of compensation?

Jaywalk
[Read the article: Will global warming slow down the Autobahn?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It could be that he didn't dare jaywalk 'cause he knew that a car could come out of nowhere at German speeds at any moment and mow him down. Punk doesn't mean stupid. It isn't always easy to judge how much time you have to cross even when you can see the car coming.
Then again, maybe he was just rebelling against your perception of him and was defying you to cross before he did!
