America and the World Cup
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]America stands less of a chace to go to the next round than does say, Trinidad and Tobago. I have a friend in T&T and she says the whole country is excited they've done as well as they have. They are realistic about how far they're likely to go.
I was looking at Yahoo News yesterday (ok, so I was bored) and there was a headline about the US in the World Cup.
Did it read "US can go to next round after tie with Italy?" No.
Did it read "US not yet eliminated after tie with Italy"? No.
It read "US can still win World Cup after tie with Italy!"
We're either utterly deusional or highly arrogant. Perhaps Soccer would stand a better chance of acceptance if we understood that doing as well as we've done is still pretty damn good.

Radio
[Read the article: Kindie rock]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If you want to hear a variety of this type of music, plus other weird kids music from many eras, try Greasy Kid Stuff on WFMU. They have a ton of shows archived on the web. You can find them here
http://www.wfmu.org/gks/
They've been on the air for years playing great stuff.

More amendments needed
[Read the article: Flag burning, the Senate and the "values of the American people"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Perhaps we should begin calling Frist and demanding amendments prohibiting people from smearing jello on replicas of the Statue of Liberty. I've never seen it, but I'm sure it reflects the values of the American People. We should also demand an Amendment prohibiting using bound copies of the Constituion for leaf pressing. Again, never seen it, but... Maybe one that prohibits wearing the Declaration of Independance as a hat! I'm sure you can come up with more, we could make it a contest.

He's probably a Sensitive Artist (King Missile Style)
[Read the article: Must I always be haunted by the loss of my one true love?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I am a sensitive artist (X6)
Nobody understands me because I am so deep.
In my work, I make allusions to books that nobody else has read,
Music that nobody else has heard,
And art that nobody else has seen.
I can't help it, because I am so much more intelligent and well-rounded
Than everyone who surrounds me.
I stopped watching tv when I was six months old
Because it was so boring and stupid,
And started reading books,
And going to recitals and art galleries.
I don't go to recitals any more,
Because my hearing is too sensitive,
And I don't go to art galleries anymore
Because there are people there,
And I can't deal with people,
Because they don't understand me.
I stay home, reading books that are beneath me,
And working on my work, which no one understands.
I am sensitive.

Recurring theme (Sensitive Artist)
[Read the article: Must I always be haunted by the loss of my one true love?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That probably applies to Monday's letter too...

Brightstar
[Read the article: Shocker! "Boy crisis" in education is overblown!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You've got some serious issues. Seek therapy. Seriously. The level of bitterness and vitriol you display simply isn't healthy. You manage to distort everything you read into some attack on you or your gender. Find some help before it is too late.

Ceej
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Studies were done recently that showed it is physically impossible for refs to corrcetly determine offsides as it stands now. Human eyesight just can't keep up. I don't think changing it from one impossible standard to another is such a bad thing, refs just need to be trained to make arbitrary judgements a little differently.

Author Choice
[Read the article: The 9/11 deniers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was sorry to see Farhad Manjoo had written this peice instead of Patrick Smith of "Ask the Pilot". Partly because I don't think Mr. Manjoo is very good at critical analysis, but mostly because I knew people would focus on him instead of the debunking of the film. He is so vehemently disliked by so many I'm sure some are dismissing what he says simply because he's the one saying it. Mr. Smith had an article on Salon a month or so ago that thoroughly and wonderfully debunked all the nonsense about 9/11. It is a shame Salon didn't provide a link to it with this newest article.
Why is this movie called "Loose Change"? I find it amusing that this title was chosen when one of the main reasons it gives for the destruction of the Twin Towers is $160 billion in gold at the base. $160 billion is essentially loose change to a government the size of the USA, why in the world would they go to such length to obtain it?
Those that are questioning the physics of the crashes should go learn somthing about physics. Again, Mr. Smith's article provides a good primer on what happened and why.
The sad reality is that the Bushies had ample warnings that something was afoot and chose to ignore it in favor of plotting against Sadaam, creating hysteria over pornography and scrambling to cover a bad economy and sagging poll numbers. Had Gore been in the White House, it is likely this all would have been avoided.

The Past
[Read the article: Capture the flag]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"All this may make Americans wonder why the Senate is now closer than ever to forcing another round in the 1970s culture wars"
Simple, because that's what being a conservative is all about. You live in the past, you have a hazy memory of how good things were "back then" even though they were likely worse than today. You rail against change and long for your childhood. The future is scary, so keep fighting the battles of long ago. If this passes, I'm sure they'll move on to some other pressing issue of today, like women starting to wear skirts above the knee or how uninhibited those "flappers" seem to be. I wouldn't be surprised to see them enter a resolution demanding Spain grant Cuba its freedom soon.

Computers
[Read the article: How can I make my brother treat my mother better?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Cary,
I don't know what you're using, but most word processors have some sort of auto-save function. If this was on, and it is normally, you should have gotten the document back when next you opened the program. If you have turned it off, go turn it back on. It doesn't always recover everything, but it usually recovers most and takes virtually no HD space.
And at the very least, just click Save when you stand up to walk away and putter.
