Sorry Poco
[Read the article: The year in politics]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]But you're flat wrong. Most of the nonsense leveled against Clinton turned out to be completely fabricated lies by the Right. Sure, the list could have been 20 pages long, but you'd have to keep making more stuff up. The list against Bush could easily be that long and you wouldn't have to make up a thing. You don't even have to go back to his days of deserting the military or abusing drugs. The entire list could be of horrible and illegal things he's done since he stole the election in 2000.
Bush is showing contempt for the rule of law and the very concept of democracy. Claiming that this is just what all presidents do shows you understand neither history nor America. Of the last 10 presidents the only ones that clearly committed similar crimes were Regan and Nixon. Bush's dad fits, but mostly for things he did before becoming President.
It isn't about anyone hating Bush, it is about Bush hating America.

One more thing, Poco
[Read the article: The year in politics]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You said "How about some solutions that don't involve me paying for them"
Have you asked this of the Republicans who spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer (i.e. your) dollars on a witch-hunt of the Clintons with nothing to back it up and nothing to show at the end?
Have you asked it of those Republicans in power that are spending hundreds of billions of taxpayer (i.e. your) dollars on a war in Iraq that they lied about to start and keep lying about today?
Have you asked it of those Republicans in power that gave the giant tax-break to the very wealthy ensuring that your money is a far higher share of the federal budget than it used to be?
Have you asked it of those Republicans in power that are taking money out of your pocket with disastrous economic policy that wasted the trillions of surplus Clinton left us, raising the debt and keeping us in or near recession?
And since you don't want to pay for anything, how about you stop using what taxes pay for: Public roads, clean water, police and fire services, anything transported anywhere in this country, gas, electric, etc...
When you whine about having to pay for government, you risk sounding like the American Traitor Grover Norquest who is evidently an anarchist and has publicly stated that he wants to destroy the US government.
You live in a society, act like it.

Stern Warning
[Read the article: Howard Stern: Prudish papa]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]From what I read in The Fix, today, right here on Salon, Howard Stern was worried that
his enemies would buy blocks of tickets, throw garbage at [her] vagina, take nude pictures of [her] and put them all over the Internet.
Sounds like he wasn't upset that she'd be nude publicly, but that she'd be abused by people that have problems with him. He didn't want his daughter to suffer for his fights. Considering how quickly her real identity was discovered, he may have had a point.

Re: Three Threads Part Two; Taking Religion for a Walk
[Read the article: What's in a hat?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Being as religion is a major part in the lives of a majority of Americans, I don’t think it is feasible to “keep it at home.”"
There's quite a bit of exaggeration going on here. Religion may be a part of a majority of American's lives. Religion may be a major part of some American's lives. However, the majority of Americans really don't pay much attention to religion until the pollster comes calling.
Look at the declining church attendances. Look at the difficulty religions are having finding priests and pastors and such. The majority of Americans don't think about religion at all unless reminded of it by others. Many of those that do profess to being quite religious are only giving lip service to the idea. As an exampole, see our lovely Mr. Abrahmoff or Pat Robertson, both of whom claim to be religious yet never seem to act within the tennants of their respective religions.
I'd also like to address the mention of Stalin as the greatest committer of atrocity. The problem here is committing unspeakable acts against mankind from an unquestionable authority. Through most of history, that authority was religious. Hitler and Stalin simply replaced religion with themselves.
I'd also love to see a study of how Hitler and Stalin stack up against the Crusades or Inquisition when adjusted for population and that doesn't even consider technological differences.

Lacrosse
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I look forward to this article as then I'll know something about Lacrosse! Or maybe not. I tried watching Cricket Highlights when in Scotland and became more confused than before I started.
Hey, why not write an article explaining Cricket for those of us not born to it?
You can do this between the Superbowl and March Madness when no interesting sports games are being played. I believe you can do this, I read your articles year-round, even when they're about things like baseball (boring) or basketball (silly) or hockey (really silly).

Repulsive indeed
[Read the article: "Women want smaller waists, not bigger IQs"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why is that even something people would have to choose between? The very phrasing of the questions as mutually exclusive results is the real problem with the "poll". This was likely designed by someone threatened by women as equals in order to reinforce the social stereotype of Men Want Pretty and Dumb. Done on purpose? Maybe, maybe not. They likely aren't all that bright themselves.

To the Author
[Read the article: What's in a hat?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have no problem whatsoever with a discussion of religion or things religious in Salon. Indeed, despite the dwindling of religion, discussion of various aspects of the lives of all Americans and indeed all those in the world are valuable and to be desired. Without it, how can we know each other or ourselves?
