@rockybalboa

"TV almost always covers up stories that are detrimental to obama or geithner or biden or any other liberal, but they will report over and over again meaningless stories about bo the dog."

Yeah, they're so intent on covering Obama's ass that they forgot themselves and seem to put Cheney on the past two days tearing up that weak, socialist, comfy with terrorist upstarter who doesn't have the sense to disregard illogical appeals to torture.

Oh, you thought GWB didn't get a fair break from the "liberal" media when the "liberal" media backed his wars, tax relief for the rich and general gutting of our infrastructure funding.

Those damn liberals in the media are letting this "liberal" President get away with literal murder, just like Bush.

Don't you just get dizzy?

What We Already Knew

No one contrarily political or even outside the suspicious net that catches erring citizens is immune. If Harman, the compromised, conciliator of (surveillance-is-good-for-you) is of interest to Big Brother's big ears, then who is not safe from their net?

Didn't we really know all along the government wanted extraordinary wiretapping intrusion not primarily because of the threat of terrorism, but to intimidate us and categorize the population into manageable, political camps?

One feels protected not by the growling, irritable bear stalking us in the forest of mounted cameras and captured e-mail, but by lone wolves who only fight because they're hungry for meat, caring not for your blanket, bread and bed.

@sgs123

Those who are about to die (have their presumption of innocence stolen by the surveillance state) salute the victimized Harmon's of the world who never cared until the great leader quoted what they said at breakfast when typied away on their notebook.

Should read--

...when they typed away on their notebook.

Shorter Shooter

If Iran is perceived disobeying UN laws, then the US is free to ignore them also.

AND

Iran is as economically and militarily powerful, arrogant and exceptional in it's agenda--

The parallels are unmistakable in a sort of I-see-evil-in-thee-but-not-in-me sort of way.

Omage Duly Noted

"General Barry McCaffrey: Nora, It's hard for me to overstate the degree of respect I have for the [CIA] agency."

Yes, I equally have the same adulation and admiration for any of the patriotic institutions which operate outside laws to accomplish the embarrassing things that will make most Americans less likely to cringe from fear of the big, bad, overwhelming population of insurgents/terrorists within this country that are ready to ponce upon all freedom-loving citizens.

@Titonwan

"I read that Rachel's show is losing popularity (regardless of reality) and I wonder when they're going to pull the plug on her. Figures. No truth allowed."

Her producers must be terribly conflicted with the journalistic pressure to tell/expose through her bold expose'(s)(last night a zinger) and the advertisers screaming that her female vehemence is too shrill. That hovering shadow of GE Corp is always present.

Olberman gets a pass until the next false flag incident on the homeland.

Makes a Mess of Foreign Policy

"...then we probably shouldn't expect that we'll be taken very seriously when we point to international obligations and U.N. pronouncements as a means for claiming that other countries are acting wrongfully." Glenn

That's the great tragedy in our disregard for conventions, treaties and laws. What a job the State Department has to unwind the poorly structured rationalizations of the past OLC and reestablish a credible semblance of trust from the foreign community that we really care about fulfilling our own Constitutional principles.

Oh, the Press Complicity

As one listens to the CNN morning anchor tease the viewer to stay tuned after the break--

"What is torture?" and "Does the safety of the country determine what measures we may use?"

That is not verbatim, but the phraseology and framing heavily suggested that we fearful Americans must rethink what torture is, since the terrorist threat is so overriding a consideration.

We are trained by these newsreaders and prevaricators to keep moving the lines of decency to accommodate our irrational reactions to the enemies (which seem to be everywhere these days).

I'm not too optimistic about the end results of prosecutors, committees, hearings and guilty verdicts accomplishing much more than the exposure of how ingrained the culture of militarism and corruption have hijacked this government.

If the truly tens of hundreds of government participants in war lies, detainee abuse, warrantless surveillance and the litany of post-9-11 ramifications of record were brought to account--

it's difficult to believe our government could continue functioning.

That is not to argue for inaction, but it is a realistic observation.

@shooter242

"This is Bush Derangement Syndrome in it's last stages before death."

Careful with the derangement diagnosis, we might have to redefine it under page 242 in the manual.

Read carefully Glenn's post today, you will find direction on how not to be politically partisan when applying the rule of law.

You knew that already, admit it.

Friday, April 24, 2009 08:40 AM

@cincinnatus

You perfectly state what the role of the Executive is--

to say it has been so politicized is truly understated, but it is a problem that spoils everything the Founders had envisioned for that leadership role.

Additionally, how much simpler the President's job would be without the draining considerations required to satisfy the political factions all the while sacrificing the Oath of Office.

The Accommodation to Conciliation and Bi-Partisanship Keeps Giving

"...key Bush torture architects such as John Rizzo and Bush intelligence policy defenders such as John Brennan are able to remain in positions of high power in the Obama administration,..."--Glenn

Those gnawing mice appointed or allowed sitting in the "change Administration" of Obama's realm prove the folly of cutting one's wrists to show humility to one's enemies.

The newly appointed GWB of 2000's triumph wasted no time in stacking the most partisan cabinet and government appointees ever.

The consequences of those partisan agents within most departments changed them so much away from the consumer/citizen protections that it will take a good eight years to reestablish their original, noble intent.
