Disappointed
[Read the article: The holy blitz rolls on]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This interview is basically junk. I had high hopes that the piece would shed some light on where the Right is heading following the last elections, but I was disappointed to read that the Christian Right is plotting the overthrow of the Constitution because we lead "empty lives". There were some points made that I would accept as possible truths such as the rapidity in which a society can collapse as bad people start knocking on your door in the middle of the night, but to conclude that the Christian Right is plotting toward totalitarianism is patently ridiculous. Evidence provided by the article to support the author's argument that we are all idiots following even bigger idiots on Christian Right TV and megachurch pulpits because we lead "empty lives in Orange County CA" is ridiculous. The national economy has been operating at or near full employment for most of the last 10 years now, and there is and will continue to be a labor shortage in this country to the point where we are bringing in millions of undocumented and documented workers each year to meet the demand. If people don't have a life it's because they are working too hard and can never seem to escape work because of instant messaging, cell phones, and advances in technology.
I am not a member of any church but I assure you that the main points made in this piece are nonsense and typical "red meat" for the liberal base that lives on Salon. If the Left, including the New York Times and Salon, keeps putting out this kind of junk with such prominence, reasonable people like me will be very busy keeping everybody honest.

The Dems better get their "voice" back
[Read the article: Democrats: Anti-surge resolution is only the beginning]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]With the war now 4 years old and no light at the end of the tunnel, with the election behind us and Bush's dismal pollings staying put, the Dems are in the process of "botching" a golden opportunity to have a say on the conduct of the war in Iraq and the GWOT, in general. Unfortunately, with Ted Kennedy saying one thing and Nancy Pelosi and Hillary saying nothing, it sounds like the Dems are suddenly losing their "voice" on the issue and a whole lot of momentum in the process. This vaccuum opens the door for mischief by the "hard left" elements in the party who will certainly speak with "one voice". Say what you like about Newt Gingrich in 1994 but he took the lead and led for the next 6 years with a single voice. The Dems need to assert themselves on the question of "surge", on the question of funding for this war, on funding for future wars and get unified behind a single voice and a common strategy. Failure to do this will open the Dems to attacks from the left as "spineless" and ridicule from the right as "weak and untrustworthy".

One Interesting Point
[Read the article: How the left caused 9/11, by Dinesh D'Souza]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]D'Souza makes one interesting observation about the likely myth that Muslims around the world are lining up to die for Palestinian causes, in particular. I agree with his point, in principle, although the author really does not comment further on the idea. I think what D'Souza is really saying is that the global war on terror is really about the clash of ideas which will always dominate the arcane details of foreign policy everywhere in the world. Maybe a Middle East settlement between Israel and the Arabs would be more probable if both sides agreed to include cultural values on the negotiating table along with the usual "land for peace" stuff that seems to be the standard measure of progress. What is so demoralizing about progress thus far in the Middle East is that there is not even a symbolic display of trust by either side. In this scenario, both sides would respect the other's values in ways that promote trust and presumably peace. The implications of this are profound because Israel, and the West by extension, would have to lighten up on the use of military force to assert itself and the Muslim world will have to denounce its rabid anti-semitism that permeates its culture.

50,000,000 Gone Missing
[Read the article: Happy anniversary]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Page Rockwell is asking us to celebrate the non-existence of 50,000,000 human beings since 1973, or 1/6 the population of the US. Somebody needs to tell me why this is a good thing to celebrate. The numbers speak for themselves.
