Yep, that's why adolescent girls who "sleep around" are called sluts and hos while the boys who have sex with them are regarded as cool.
Hmmm, seems to me that these attitudes might have deeper roots. I kind of remember this book I read in high school called A Scarlet Letter. You might have heard of it, too. The folks in that book were a sect of religious extremists called Puritans who needed to find a whole new world so that they could put their warped views on human sexuality into practice. While I realize that we've come a long way from those times (thought religious extremists still abound), I find it to be a disingenous to completely disregard the centuries of human history in which women were openly punished for their sexuality. Yeah, maybe you got rejected at the bar last night, but isn't it a bit simplistic to only consider the here and now in a debate about relations between the sexes?
All snarkiness aside, I find it appalling that anyone can say that only men are punished for the sexuality when we know that honor killings and other hideous crimes against women continue in other parts of the world on a daily basis. As long as there are places in this world where a man can justify killing his four daughters, there will be no equality between the sexes.
I'm torn about this one. I absolutely hated the Reese storyline and always wanted something terrible to befall her character.
However, if she was really fired because she was pregnant (and not because her storyline was lame, lame, lame), she deserves monetary compensation from ABC.
Contrary to the assertions of other writers, not all soap opera actors are breathtaking specimens of physical beauty. The letter writer who pointed out Tony Geary as an example was right on. His character has grown old and gray, but still gets to date young, attractive women.
I recently read a case where a woman sued a strip club because they did not hire her because she was 8 months pregnant. I absolutely agree that it was within the strip club's right to do so. It's not very easy to hide a hugely pregnant belly when you're swinging around a pole naked. However, there are several ways to deal with a pregnant soap opera actress; the most obvious being writing the pregnancy into her storyline.
Having Reese get pregnant would have made that stupid storyline even stupider. But, it wouldn't have made me quit watching GH the few days a year when I'm home in the daytime. Stupid storylines that make me mad are precisely the reason I've kept coming back to GH for mindless daytime entertainment for years.
As other letter writers have noted, this lawsuit demonstrates why America's schools are in trouble. Parents want schools to either "fix" or reward their childrens' problem behaviors. If there's something wrong with Johnny, it has to be the school's fault; it can't be Johnny or his parents. This sets up the attitude that teachers aren't worthy of respect, thereby engendering more disruptive behavior on Johnny's part. If Johnny's parents don't think that his teacher's education, standards and objectives are entitled to respect, why should Johnny?
What's sad is that most educators truly want to help kids, even ones with behavior issues. Why else would they be there? They certainly aren't there for the pay. But, the lack of resources and respect from the community prevent teachers from effectively reaching their students. Sure, if a school district had enough money, it could have special teachers and classes for those with other learning styles, like the boisterous boys in question. However, our society doesn't find it necessary or worthwhile to adequately fund schools. We would rather spend billions and billions of dollars securing future petroleum reserves by forcing "democracy" on a country that isn't ready for it. So, what do we end up with? A classroom with one teacher and 30 students and that teacher is expected to hold the attention of all 30 students and be able to reach each student on an individual level. With this kind of system, some kids are going to slip through the cracks. It used to be disproportionately girls, but now it's boys. It's not about sex discrmination; it's about discrimination against all those who have a hard time learning with a 30/1 student teacher ratio.
On a different issue, do we really need to the "all lawyers are scumbags" commentary? Yes, there are some shady lawyers out there. But, I went to law school to make a difference for people and each day at work, I strive to hold myself to that standard. I certainly don't think that litigation is the way to solve all of society's problems. However, if someone (maybe a doctor?) acted in a grossly negligent way and that action was directly responsible for your permanent disfigurement, are you telling me that you wouldn't want to sue the hell out of that person?
Finally - (to jeffrey) - Did Lisa Randall wither and fade?
