Rahm Emanuel. Oh, my.
What else could we expect from our corporatocracy. Democracy? Enlightened? Educated? Stewards? Conservationists? Sane land use? Phooey. This is Amer'ca. We have a bloody history with respect to wildlife (remember the bison? the passenger pigeon?); might as well continue to take all the habitat and food for us (we need those second homes and the calories, for sure), shoot what we can for fun, and roadkill the rest with our SUV's. We'll be left only with rats and cockroaches--but wait! That's what we have in the Bush Administration now.
What are Camille Paglia's science credentials?
Ernest Sternglass was right. The bomb testing did lower our intelligence.
Politicians are especially susceptible. Here's a sentence from a letter I received from Senator Bob Corker (R-TN), dated May 15, 2007:
"I want to close by recognizing the tremendous service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. They are patriots, and we owe them a great debt of gratitude for their mission to provide security for our country, and to win the War on Terror." (caps his)
A patriot is someone who loves his country and promotes its interests. It's unclear what interests those "patriots" in the White House and Congress had in mind when they started the Iraq war, what security problems Iraq posed at that time, and what U.S. interests the politicians have in mind as they continue to promote and fund the war. How long do they they they can pull the wool over our eyes? Indefinitely, apparently.
If Senator Corker can define winning the "War on Terror," he can nail jello to the wall, too.
Politicians need to be educated that we at home are patriots, too, and that the War is in Iraq.
Paglia is a bloviator, a waste of time.
GYMS SHOULD NOT PLAY MUSIC. Or have 24-hour TVs. WHY WHY WHY is this obnoxious sound and chatter imposed on us all in public places? God invented the iPod and headphones, remember? Our brains respond to music, but we're each wired and tuned differently and have had different emotional experiences with music. What is soothing or energizing for one person jangles another's nerves. Mozart's "Requiem" works to zone out one person, "Soldier's Joy" zones out someone else. A few minutes of metallic music makes me crazy, and some amplified music sits on the edge of pain. Who needs it to be held hostage to this? What's wrong with a little quiet? Bring back white noise. In a waterfall is the preservation of the world.
Teddy Roosevelt and some gentlemen friends founded the Boone and Crockett Club in December 1887 in Roosevelt's New York City house. The Club's constitution included this:
"Article V:
"The term 'fair chase' shall not be held to include killing bear or cougar in traps, nor "fire-hunting" nor "crusting" moose, elk or deer in deep snow, nor 'calling' moose, nor killing deer by any other method than fair stalking or still-hunting, nor killing game from a boat while it is swimming in the water, nor killing the female or young of any ruminant, except the female of white goat or of musk-ox."
Bullies like to throw their weight around and kick butt, just for the heckuvit. We know these kinds of people well. They're both frightening and fascinating. But they really shouldn't be elected to the student or any other kind of council. McNasty's Naval Academy grades were just too, too rock-bottom to indicate he'd do any kind of homework, and the Drilla from Wasilla doesn't have our best interests at heart.
They need a new writer or two. Maya and Fred didn't invoke anything recognizable. Fred didn't even stay in voice at the end of his sentences. It made me wish for the creativity of the Capitol Steps.
I forget the cartoonist/comic strip. I saw it a week ago.
