"In Europe, and in many parts of American public opinion, military power is seen as an option of last resort"

"many parts of american public opinion"? after 9/11 even the pacifists were seeking to hang all the muslims/arabs. friends of mine who were never happy with israel's treatment of the palestinians were suddenly in favor of nuking the entire arab peninsula. and the majority of americans supported invading iraq for years, until it got too costly. and the antiwar folks couldn't drum up more than lip service, famously. and now obama is elected on a platform of keeping the war going in afghanistan.

yeah, that's many parts alright. i guess that if they had to go hide in the basement a couple of times a day for fear of rockets landing on their house, even though they hardly ever killed anybody, they would seek mutual discourse and airing of grievances before agonizingly choosing the path of war as a last resort.

of course the big question is why do hamas/palestinians choose the path of war when it's clear they can't win a military victory, and all they can hope for is a huge disaster and a lot of global sympathy which never seems to get them anything else? what do they have to lose by actually stopping the rockets for a year and using the carrot of peace and the stick of starting the bombardment again to manipulate the israeli voters to get their government to lighten up?

lemme also point out

that chemotherapeutic drugs tend to be toxic, as most folks understand. you really don't want to just overdose people and kill them in the process of getting rid of the tumor.

the doctors aren't just too lazy to weigh the patient. as everyone seems to want to explain, there is solid biological reasoning behind their madness.

"The one thing that bugs me about this Israel/Pal nonsense is we have to pay for it. Hey Israel, if you want to steal land and toss weak people into reservations, that’s great, just do it on your own dime."

Yeah; because brutalizing and killing Iraqis isn't free, you know. We need every penny ourselves for our own Arab-bashing.

Original article: The Israel rules

Imagine that Indian people were becoming the majority in America

Heck, don't have to go that far; imagine that a dozen or so arabs who don't believe in the legitimacy of the US and its economic expansionism manage a sneak attack that kills a few thousand Americans; the reaction of america would be enormous. anybody who was an arab would be at risk from both the government and "patriots". even anybody who could vaguely be compared to an arab because they wore a turban or something. demagogue politicians could easily whip the populace into a frenzy giving them carte blanche to not only quash their political opponents at home but engage in military adventures abroad under the vague rubric of preemptive self-defense against an imminent attack. long standing and almost axiomatic human rights like habeas corpus and prohibition of torture could even be repealed without the public rebelling. (yes, i know it's farfetched, but it could happen!)

yes, this could happen, even in America! so give the Israelis the courtesy of not expecting them to behave any better than you and your fellow citizens, please.

of course, however, israel is deserving of all this strife, because many indigenous residents had to move a dozen miles or even more when the white men arrived, either because they were forced to, because they thought they were forced to, because the new folks bought the property, or because they didn't want to live in the neighborhood when the Jews moved in; and others were killed. thus the country should be dismantled and the property given back to the folks who say their relatives used to live there 50 years ago, even if they can't prove that their ancestors sold the place. after all, if they were a legitimate country like the US, the israelis' ancestors would have so thoroughly massacred the indigenous population that the question would be moot; in addition this would avoid the thorny question of whether the property had been purchased or stolen, as there isn't a need to purchase property from somebody you've killed.

and this is why we're morally justified in requiring israel to live up to different rules than we expect of ourselves.

yep, a good candidate for antidepressants

especially those with anxiolytic properties. however, individual response to each of the varied drugs in the category is very different, so you may have to try a few before one clicks in; and it can take a good while on one of these drugs before its effect stabilizes. so you may be in for a period of weirdness while "experimenting with drugs"; some of them may even make things worse. and it doesn't help that health plans are trying to steer people to the cheaper generics, which are certainly worth trying, but may not be effective for every case. but stick with it.

proportional response

so, you guys would all be OK if israel merely lobbed a rocket randomly into gaza for every one which hamas sends out randomly into israel?

"BTW don't worry about Canada, we don't have any missiles"

not so fast there, gordy macdonald or whatever your name really is. americans haven't forgotten that the canadians burned the white house during the war of 1812. the price of liberty is eternal vengeance. americans are ready for your next attempt to take away our guns and force us to have healthcare. just as we invaded iraq to derail any attack by al qaeda, we invaded grenada to abort the next attack by canada. and notice how well it has worked.

How is it you guys all saw these that nobody else saw, but you didn't see Obama's birth certificate, which everybody else saw?
