Original article: Rush Limbaugh was right

it was funny

one of the best weapons against the shmucks is to make fun of them and that cover did that, in spades.

as for the humor of the right, a la limbaugh: it always involves either making fun of somebody (white house dog...) or somebody else's injuries or death (i wish the plane had hit the NYTimes) or both.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 07:34 AM

well, gee

who are you going to believe? somebody who's spent their life studying medicine and fighting disease (and beaten out quite a few less qualified individuals to do so) or a cute chick who seems to have a nice personality and makes a living from exhibitionism?

coming tomorrow: britney spears discusses AGW.

look at the bright side

does this mean they might at least have a shred of guilt? better than i had hoped.

look at the bright side

with a little luck, this can turn into one of those letters to penthouse. maybe even a latenight cable movie.

it's not as if they don't warn you

i mean, they advertise big horses; how much more of a clue do you need what the stuff is?

the president owns america

and that explains why everybody who opposes the president's policies is viewed as opposing america

much as in absolute monarchies; "l'etat c'est moi".

is it possible that the historical dominance of monarchy is due to the primate instinct to submit to an alpha male being too powerful to be overcome in a large proportion of humans?

Original article: Recycling the old bicycle

no current bikes?

you mean nobody makes 17 inch rim skinnny tire drop handlebar classic "ten speeds" anymore? (not rhetoric, i'm not familiar with the current state of the biz and am surprised that it would be the case, so i'm asking)

yakov smirnov updated

In soviet russia, if you wear button criticizing leader, you go to jail. In America, if you... oh, never mind. Bad example.

have no fear!

have faith; any day now, the second amendment defenders of freedom, heartened by their recent supreme court victory, will come forward to defend those whose freedom of expression has been suppressed by the bushies' misuse of government armed power, because dammit even if they disagree with the progesters' opinions, they will defend their freedom to express them! and that's why we need those privately owned firearms, as we've been told.

just as they defended black people and "freedom riders" from the KKK in the 60s. well, ok, bad example.

just as they defended japanese-americans from federal incarceration for no reason other than race during WWII. ok, another bad example.

just as they defended arab-americans from widespread roundups after 9/11. ok, another bad one.

just as they defended striking coal miners and their families from being massacred. ok, not that one either.

maybe somebody can help me out.... anyway, that's why we need our second amendment rights.

to sum up

liberals and obama supporters are a bunch of wimps who run from the slightest confrontation, and also they go to mccain appearances to make trouble and disrupt them. i hope that's clear.

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 08:29 AM

please

i must beg you to stop publicly shaming those of us who thought when lieberman ran vs ned lamont that he learned his lesson and would steer clear of that bad crowd he had been running with. we're all damn embarrassed at being sucked in and it won't happen again. fool me twice, afoolmuh, can't be fooled agin. oh well, i suppose we must pay for our sin, so go ahead, let us be a lesson to the young ones.

Thursday, July 24, 2008 10:54 AM

why not?

cool that such a thing exists. but third worlders and their cousins the graduate students have been hauling on bikes for years; whether modified or stock. whether it's the peasant hauling 200 pounds of rice stacked up all over or me shlepping a hoover vacuum cleaner home from the store on my rear parcel rack (actual event) it can be done, especially if a car is not a conceivable option.

Original article: Hang up and drive

no kidding

given that, like everybody in the world, when i'm on the phone and one of the kids comes up and starts talking to me i shush him/her, this is not a big surprise.

Original article: Quote of the day

they already made a film aout the hero bush is

it was called "Being There". it gave sort of a whitewashed picture of him, of course.

whatever happened to

meisterbrau?

Original article: What's the answer to this?

bizarre evidence

a lot of the evidence against ivins is about as convincing as deciding the police ballistics expert is the murderer because his fingerprints were foundon the gun, given that ivins' lab did so much work identifying the strains for the FBI.

where is adrian monk when we need him?

Original article: Did Elizabeth Edwards know?

?

do i give a good goddamn?

Original article: Hyping the Chevy Volt

first things first

I'm still waiting for the Chrysler Patriot.

Original article: The beast

it's a good point

but it's not limited to just athletics; the world has "professionals", because i can't think of a better word just now not because they are paid, and it has dilettants. and right now we live in an era where people think their hobbies and amateur dabbling make them the equal of somebody who has dedicated their life to something. coincidentally, slate has an article right now going the other way on a similar topic:

"Following her around one night, I realized why I will never really be in shape. For me, a complete workout was a hard 45 minutes. Fanny works out 5 days a week for about 2 hours at a time. She weighs 110 pounds, and I watched as she bench-pressed 100 pounds. I was microwaving, when what it really took was hours of basting." http://www.slate.com/id/2196984/

of course, somebody's got to tie this in with the apparent ability of anybody anywhere at any time to spend 15 minutes reading a rightwing blog and know more about global warming (just the most frequent current example) than all the folks who got a phd in the subject and have been spending their lives studying it. because these brilliant amateurs are certainly more than happy to educate the rest of us. apparently political orientation breeds cosmic brilliance.

Friday, August 15, 2008 08:57 AM

the pendulum swings

every generation wakes up thinking the world was ever thus, and figures out how to improve it; we don't teach history well enough for them to know they are just repeating it. so, yeah, it's getting about time for the New Deal to come around again. good thing, too.
