Gack

Even more:

Running the air conditioner saves mileage? Uh, I don't know about you guys, but when I turn on the AC on my admittedly aging Civic, I can feel the engine start to labor more; in fact, no kidding, there's one long hill on my commute where I switch the AC on to help with braking. Whereas, thanks to the magic of electric windows, I can open all the windows and the sunroof while driving, and you know, the engine doesn't drop an rpm and the car doesn't slow down. Maybe it's different with a Land Crusher V-12, but I note that those vehicles aren't all that aerodynamic to begin with, compared to the Civic. And of course, the slower you drive, the less effect opening the windows will have, while the AC keeps the same drain at different speeds.

Good call on turning the engine off rather than idling, though. Most people seem to have a misconception that starting the car uses more gas, for some reason. Not when it's warm, for sure; in fact the last thing I read a couple of days ago cited the average breakeven point at 6 seconds, less than the 15 seconds cited in your article. (I don't do it at red lights, though, just in major traffic jams or while waiting for somebody or something for an unknown time)

Like somebody or other once said

When my kids say they want to be rich and famous, I advise them to just try being rich first, and see if that doesn't fill the bill.

A big picture kind of guy

If there were anything he needed to know about Pakistan, it would have been in the Bible. Hell, Born Again George couldn't even remember Musharaff's name during the campaign, and look how well that worked out.

it ain't what you believe, it's what you do

There are plenty of people who think "blacks aren't as intelligent as whites", yet seem to treat every single black person they meet as yet another exception to that rule, which applies only to all those black people "out there" that the media report on. Just for one example. Not what I'd prefer to have them think, but the damage they do is limited to voting Republican.

(of course, that leads inexorably to the fact that there are plenty of people who believe with all their heart in the equality of all mankind and that African Americans still get a raw deal and that that's something which needs to be remedied ASAP, and subconsciously treat black people who "act black" as though they had some sort of borderline contagious disease which might rub off on them and their family.)

Jew bad.

Original article: Listening to Obama

i won't vote for somebody on whether he can make nice with the rightwingnuts

perhaps oddly, this nonpartisan uniter not a divider shtick is the thing i like least about obama. clinton (William) had the same kind of force of charisma, and he didn't do so well at taming the rabid right. on the other hand, he did get things done, to some degree. on the other other hand, the rabid right legacy continued after his demise.

thanks for sharing

"I've not seen the show but

I'm sure it's of the hand held fuzzy high contrast variety."

why is it people named anonymous are always eager to share their ignorance with us, when we didn't ask?

Original article: Tigers don't belong in zoos

who's inside and who's outside?

i still remember visiting the ape compound (didn't have bars, was separated from the human visitors by a "moat" and a high wall) at a small zoo many years ago; when a human family held up their little kid to get a better look, the apes got all excited and held up their baby, to get a better look at the cute little human. then one of them starting throwing pieces of fruit to the humans. not "at" the humans, as far as i could tell, but to them. slightly disquieting, on many levels.

huh?

"When men are freed to do as they please they create glorious masterworks, miles long bridges, building sized structures going to the moon, solutions to diseases, Hamlet."

Well, I don't know where you live. When most men, especially under the age of 60, around here are freed to do as they please, they fuck incessantly and irresponsibly and become completely engrossed by random sex.

otherwise, we'd have a hell of a lot more bridges and Hamlets.

human meets robot

remember those search sites from back when, where humans organized the sites for you into categories, etc.? well, nowadays wikipedia has become a well organized front end for web pages, and google indexes wikipedia.

handy combination appliance

i've been thinking that the flash in a camera or even a camera-phone might serve as a usable taser if you ran the wires out the side.

Original article: It's my abortion, too!

bad analogies for your consideration.

well, don't take it as too close a parallel, but I'm not sure that the chicken and the pig deserve equal say in whether the farmer is going to have bacon and eggs for breakfast.

As for me, I don't know if I'd be upset when my child-to-be is eliminated by a woman choosing abortion; but I do know that I get upset when my child-to-be is eliminated by a woman choosing not to have sex with me.

what goes around bites you in the ass

Well, the classic example of Unintended Blowback was when feminists convinced the Canadian government to pass stringent laws against importing pornography, which were (inevitably) then used to confiscate a shipment of feminist-oriented lesbian erotic publications.
