speciation happens pretty frequently, especially in plants.

aside from the triticale, etc. where do you think seedless watermelons come from? they are a cross between diploid (two sets of chromosomes) and tetraploid (4 sets of chromosomes) parents, which yield progeny with 3 sets of chromosomes, which can't undergo reductive division to provide reproductive cells with half of 3 sets of chromosomes, so they have no seeds. So they're sterile. Mules, if you will. By definition, therefore, the two parent strains are different species, like horses and donkeys.

but where did the tetraploid parent come from? from diploid watermelons. A new species appearing from a different species. How bout that.

not that big a problem

at base, the question of "waste" heat from hand driers as well as waste heat from incandescent lights, etc. ignores the fact that a large chunk of the population spends a lot of money for a big chunk of the year, trying to add heat to their homes and businesses. When calculating how much energy is actually wasted as heat from appliances, lights, etc. the fact that NO heat is wasted for much of the year in most of the US should be factored into it.

remember, we're not dealing with the reality-based community here

"your honor, the defendant was arrested after publicly, in full view of hundreds of people, tearing the heads off dozens of puppies, bunnies, and little babies"

"Objection! the prosecution is trying to bias the jury against my client!"

Original article: America's water war

But but but

All the levelheaded folks have been telling us for years that all this moonbat worrying about climate change is wrong, and that we should just trust the free enterprise system to fix it, and that it will wreck the economy to try to stop pissing off the climate, and that it will be cheaper to deal with the byproducts of climate change than avoid it. So, hang in there Georgia, everything's going according to plan, just as you voted in 2000 and 2004.

but we're special

Sure, we have 10,000 years of history during which every empire has grown, ossified, and crumbled, but that couldn't happen to the US, because we're not like them. They undoubtedly knew that their empires would fall, just like we know ours won't. They undoubtedly knew that God wasn't on their side, just like we know God is on our side. Anyway, we spare no expense to ensure that our educational system gives kids a great education, including a deep knowledge of history, so that they can make the choices to elect the right people to prevent our decline.

cause or effect?

"If not for Bush and the mandate from on high to dismantle this nation and sell off the parts, we would still be riding high as a nation."

I don't know about that. For seven years now I've been musing about whether the Bush administration is the cause of American decline, or just a symptom. Most likely both, in a feedback situation.

My own opinion; the US peaked in the early 70s, it's been turning into a third world nation since. Not in the sense of racial makeup or anything like that, but in the behavior of its citizens and leaders, and their expectations.
