  • So Glad to see Camille on Salon.com again!

    [Read the article: Camille's back!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I echo the comment in another letter: it would be even better to read a WEEKLY Camille letter instead of just a monthly letter. The more Camille, the better! Hated her absence, glad for the return!!

    Thankx, Salon.com!

  • CONGRATS!

[Read the article: Salon wins Webby award]

As a repeat Premium subscriber, I offer my congratulations on this well-deserved award. High quality and wide-ranging content has its rewards.

  • Ah, who generates more letters than Camille?

[Read the article: Dogma days ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

They love her! [maybe] They hate her! [maybe] They READ her columns! [DEFINITELY!] There's nothing like a column from Camille to stir the Salon faithful, one way or another. I say, as I always have, that she's a great asset for Salon.com .

  • Beautiful response to a thorny question

[Read the article: I'm a brilliant scientist and I fear for the world's fate]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

We all run into the "Science vs. Religion" problem at one time or another, and the only viable answer is ... NEITHER ONE, by itself, is sufficient. Both must be considered to explain the great mystery of reality.

Cary, this is easily the best and most enjoyable article of yours that I've ever read, thanks so much.

  • Fabulous article, Camille

[Read the article: Fresh blood for the vampire]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Well written, well phrased, and well timed -- a very entertaining read by any measure. Your articles are just about the only ones I bother to comment on. THANK YOU for your continuing contributions to Salon!

  • Outrage? You expect outrage?

[Read the article: Where is the outrage?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Outrage might be expected from informed, thinking citizens. But the average American no longer has enough brainwave activity to be capable of independent thought. All they want to know is who won American Idol. For most, the financial death of America is too much for even brief contemplation.

  • No eulogy for Mr. Newman would be sufficient

[Read the article: More than just a beautiful face]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

So I will just say "THANK YOU" for the great movies, and for the example of what it means to be a Compassionate Human Being. Blessings on your departed soul, Mr. Newman.

  • Fabulous, humbling, inspirational article

    [Read the article: Crash]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

THANK YOU so much for this intense article laced and soaked with empathy for an unfortunate and unknown person. One must approach, or at least witness, an actual death in order to pen such lines or think such thoughts. The deceased appreciates your words. And so do I.

  • Opus, ONE of a kind

[Read the article: The end of "Opus"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Never a character like him before, nor ever will there be again. I think I'm gonna cry! [sobbing sound]. THANK YOU Mr. Breathed for all the years and all the memories. Genius it was, all of it. Sheer genius.

  • If only the bailout money was available for mass transit

[Read the article: Who says Americans won't ride mass transit?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I haven't done an economic analysis, but based on a gut feel, I'd bet that $750 billion would build a fully functional mass transit system for every city in the U.S. with a population of 300,000 and over. Plus, a couple of brand new, fully staffed and fully equipped hospitals. Plus free ice cream for everyone. At least.

What a pity. What a waste of $$$.

Grind on, Washington politicians. Grind on.

  • I agree!

[Read the article: Condi Rice on Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

She showed 100% genuine happiness in this video, with no trace of scripted emotion. Watching her thrill gives a thrill to the viewer.

  • Agreed

[Read the article: I'm grateful for Barack Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I agree with you Joan. The new administration offers more hope than the old one, by at least 10,000%. Perfect, no. Better, yes. Lots and lots better.

  • Older Southerners APPRECIATE the American car industry

[Read the article: The economic Civil War]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Please allow me, a Southerner, to point out the fact that many Southern families were preserved from starvation in the 30's and 40's because they could "go up North" and find a job in "Detroit City". The money earned kept many a family intact, and truly, literally prevented starvation in many instances. The people of my grandparents' generation did not like living in the North (you love where you're born, no matter where that is), but they were always grateful for the chance to make a decent living wage in an era where that was very hard to obtain.

I have personal memories of this, related to me by my grandparents who found a job in Detroit, and their brothers and sisters who found jobs there, and in Chicago, etc. They always said they were glad to be able to return South years later, but had only good things to say about the opportunity they found. Cadillac Motors, Detroit Brass, the telephone company, and other companies provided my family a chance to survive. And we older Southerners have NOT forgotten that.

I have cringed with all this backstabbing of the American auto industry recently. Please folks, just know that not everyone here feels that way. I hope to see the American auto industry thrive for centuries to come.

And to the guy who said Sherman was too generous when he torched our land -- you have no idea what you're talking about buddy. Try living through that yourself and see how it feels. I have personally heard tales related to me by my great grandmother about that. It was a very horrible experience. You may not have meant it, but that comment was way out of line. Anyway ... Peace.

  • Fabulous article, thanks!

[Read the article: A brand-new day]

What a pleasure it is to have an extremely literate President who, unlike Dubya, can string together more than two sentences, and deliver a speech without an embarrassing gaffe.

  • So true, so accurate, so sad

[Read the article: This Modern World]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

And four years from now the arguments will be exactly the same. Save it in the archives, it will need to be published again.

  • The old sage saying is true

[Read the article: This Modern World]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Money is, indeed, the root of all evil.

So which addiction is harder to break, money or drugs? Money, baby. And by a mile. There is no hope that our elected leaders, or the rich people who funnel money to them, will ever speak, vote, or care for us, the poor common people.

    It was ever thus.

  • Right-wing radio -- going downhill fast

    [Read the article: Radio rage]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As a former devotee of right-wing radio, I am saddened and even somewhat horrified whenever I attempt to listen to those radio talk shows today. Their tone and timbre of voice allow me to listen to no more than 5 or 10 minutes. The only thought that repeats in my mind while listening is "the voice of hatred, the voice of hatred, ...". I'm pretty conservative, but all coins have two sides. No one is always right, or always wrong. You'd never know that, listening to these guys! They offer a nonstop stream of high-volume accusations and hatred, nothing more.

  • Great list of sites

[Read the article: Movies online: The future is (almost) here]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Great list of sites, thank you!

  • No way will they be shut down

[Read the article: "I would shut down the hedge fund industry"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

They're untouchable, they supply way too much kickback $$$ to the politicians on every level, city/state/US. They're here to stay. Oink oink!
