I'm not sure 100%, but I just was watching some replays on YouTube and it looks from the best angle (at ~20-25 sec on the videolink in my signature)that the ball played off his chest -- although it might have been his shoulder.
The Metro reported 437,624 riders on 9/12 (they had 1.12m on Jan 20 for Obama Inauguration). They seem to average ~300k riders on recent Saturdays (the most recent was Labor Day weekend at 300,963 and last year for 2nd Sat in Sept was 362,773). Based on this, there were ~75-80k additional riders for 9/12 -- calculating for the % from Jan 20 (given a crowd of ~1.8m) the upper estimate of people is ~130k (about 2x as many as estimates on MSM, but only about an order of magnitude below Glenn Beck's estimate...)
...also forgot the 24th Black Family Reunion -- that might have added to the total of riders.
