PSB POLL
[Read the article: Your daily Palin, dammit]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Coming in late to this discussion, I went to the PBS link and voted "No" but see the GOP robots are doing as they're told. The current results are 52% saying Palin is qualified, to 45% saying she's not, with only 2% undecided.
As to her "hotness" that's not all together new in politics, especially at this level. When it was all male, the good looks of the men frequently trumped over good qualities. More important, height was an important factor. I think it still is, given that John McCain didn't pick someone like Mitt Romney because the others are taller than him and, like Romney, tower over the shorter man, which makes McCain look less like a leader and more like a dottering old guy.
I've noticed that all the front-and-center republicans (even those who really dislike McCain and even those who call themselves feminists and are opposed to almost everything Palin stands for) are on message. They're all using the same talking points and even the same words and phrases. It's what we've been seeing throughout the Bush administration. There doesn't seem to be an independent thinker (or talker) among the crowd.
I'm thinking that the republicans aren't willing to deal with the reality of the situation and see Sarah Palin simply as a vice president and refuse to accept the fact that John McCain might not be able to carry out a full term in office. (After all, experience shows them that Dan Quayle never moved up to presidency and, if anything, republicans live in the past!) In many people, it's a case of them not being able to confront their own mortality, for sure. And they transfer that fear to McCain. Others, it's the terror of going against "the message" although I'm sure they're spending a lot of sleepless nights questioning her credentials. And a few, I'm sure, it's simply pride at a woman reaching this level--no matter how much they would have much rather had a true feminist who supports their own stance on women's issues.
I, for one, don't want to see you stop running "Your daily Palin" although I'd prefer to not see Palin articles headlining Salon. Your little tidbits keep our side energized. Frankly, I'd like to know what role the First Dude plays in her current administration and what role he will play should the "Palin-McCain" ticket (oops....there's a slip of the tongue, not unlike Palin's description the other day) win or steal the election.
Oh, and have you noticed that Sarah and Todd have been appearing at GOP events together the past couple of weeks without the children but now that things are getting a little hot (I mean the fire is at her heels...not that SHE'S hot because she's NOT) they've dragged out little Trig for daddy to hold on stage while mommy is making her speeches?
Finally, the McCain campaign and its supporters have such a distorted ability to see real beauty - inside and out - and true sexiness that they would settle for the schoolmarm-with-an-upswept-hairdo attractiveness (who has a self-described pitbull personality---my apologies to pitbulls and their owners) and not rise up in outrage that the presidential running mate of Palin offered his wife up as a contestant in a motorcycle-babe "beauty" contest!

What a bunch of crap!!!!!!
[Read the article: Quote of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Women like Sarah Palin -- and other queen bees who have reached a high level in the business and political world -- THINK they've done it on their own. Bull! It's groups like NOW, NARAL, NWPC, LWV, AAUW, and a whole host of other groups at the national and local levels -- and their members -- who worked their butts off to strike down laws and customs that prevented women from achieving their full potential. (And before us there were our grandmothers who were suffragettes and even went to jail for their beliefs!) To say the groups we worked with and for are outdated, and to pooh-pooh their importance, is an JUST PLAIN WRONG!
We suffered the indifference, barbs, and even threats and kept in there working to insure that our daughters and granddaughters - and THEIRS - had freedoms denied to us. So, don't insult us by saying what we did -- and still do -- is insignificant.
One of the key things we did on a daily basis was to combat the lies tossed at us by the Phyllis Schlafly crowd. For those of you who don't know who Phyllis Schlafly is, she was the arch-conservative leader of the anti-ERA movement. So it stands to reason that we (and our daughters and granddaughters who are acutely aware of what we all did in those days) would be opposed to Sarah-Phyllis Palin-Schlafly posing at a feminist and indicating that she got there on her own.
Thanks, Ellie Smeal, for that wonderful quote! And a BIG THANK YOU, also, to NOW for also moving outside their women-only endorsement mode to endorse the Obama-Biden ticket!!

SEND THE MONEY TO DEMOCRAT CAMPAIGNS!
[Read the article: I'm gay, I provide for my parents, and they're voting Republican!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'd tell them "I'm sorry I can't help you out right because I'm sending that amount of money this month, and next, and right up to the election to ___________ campaign to help get Democrats elected to the White House and to Congress. After that, I'll think about helping you out. Right now, they need my support more than you do."
Sounds cold? Maybe. But it will get the point across and, by the way, why aren't your other siblings helping them out financially also? Note that when they retire and need help, those siblings will be just as uninvolved as they are. I know that from experience.
If they all resent you for standing by your ideals, so what.
