I don't keep the actual numbers by week or month, but am I right in thinking that more Americans died in Iraq and Afghanistan last month than the number who died on that Virginia campus?
But we keep one set of numbers low key and publicize over and over and over and over again the latest "tragedy."
Not to trivialize the college shootings, but there's a greater tragedy going on over there that needs to be publicized over and over and over and over again. At least until the American public "gets it." Ya think?
Krauthammer says it draws its inspiration from the manifestos, the iconic photographs of the Islamic suicide bombers over the last half decade in Palestine, in Iraq and elsewhere.
Seems to me the so-called manifesto - or similar documents - have been issued by others no way related to those with extreme Islamic beliefs. How about the Unibomber and the separatists and the American militia movements? It amazes me how the neocons can twist things to make them appear somehow related to the "wonderful" thing we're doing in bringing democracy to the middle east (the same way Mohammed brought Islam to the middle east---by imposing the beliefs upon those they conquered in wars)
Unfortunately, my local paper is now carrying Krauthammer. This is the second column they've published. YUCK! And I was thoroughly dismayed at how he could have taken anything that Barack Obama said as exploiting the Virginia Tech tragedy.
Do these people have no shame? The other night Charlie Rose had Tom Delay on his show. I listened a bit out of curiosity and then asked my husband to shut off the TV because "The Hammer" was polluting the air in our house! Same thing. I almost believe they believe they're telling the truth. It reminds me of a relative who lied so much about her age, she couldn't remember how old she really was in her later years without checking her birth certificate! Only, her lies were harmless.
I know Debra Dickerson writes controversial stuff and although I am sometimes cautious about stating opinions on her articles, I totally agree with what she has to say this time. Moreover, I'm surprised that so many others are taking her to task for telling it like it is. What has happened to feminism? Has it fallen by the wayside? A forgotten ideal? Something only we aging feminists - black and white -- from the ERA battles still believe in?
Having met both of the Obamas (although I'm sure neither would remember me) I can flatly say (just as I've said since before he was elected to the U.S.Senate in an shoe-in race) that the spouse in that marriage who should be the Senator is Michelle. She has a solid head on her shoulders. He's a dreamer, who is now caught up in a whirlwind dream of becoming the president.
I'll always remember what Michelle Obama told a packed house of women prior to that election when asked what she said to her husband before he went on stage to make that speech before the Democrat convention. She said "Don't blow it!" and now it appears she isn't taking her own advice.
True, there are young children involved. But perhaps they both need to consult with fellow Chicagoans Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Sandi Jackson. Featured in the National Urban League's URBAN INFLUENCE magazine (February-March, 2007 edition) the article lead-in reads:
Inextricably linked to their passionate pursuit of excellence, intertwined between the unyielding demands of political activism and the uncompromising quest for equal opportunity, is the bond between political powerhouses...
The give-and-take between the Jacksons (as she has pursued a position on the Chicago City Council, while he serves in the U.S.Congress) doesn't involve one giving up a career, but the intermingling of both of their careers while working for common goals.
Frankly, I believe that Michelle Obama is giving up her career because she's being forced into doing so. Not by her husband. But by political handlers far more ambitious than either one of them, who are from an era that says women must give up their goals for their husband's careers. That not only saddens me. It makes me almost sick with frustration. What a waste!
I didn't know the VP was protected by the Presidential Records Act? Well, I guess this pretty much tells us what we've know all the time: Cheney considers himself the president. And....worse.....he is!
Having read the entire Left Behind series just for fun, I continue to be amazed at the comparisons I find between this administration and the fictional story based on biblical prophesies. But it seems to have become fiction gone awry, because the intent of its co-author Tim LaHaye was to illustrate the story of good vs. evil and he's definitely a proponent of this administration's activities. And the current administration increasingly appears to be moving in the direction of the evil dictator. In this case, the comparison is between the new world leader's decision to move the seat of power to New Babylon. There he built a massive opulent complex, with state-of-the-art technology, places for all of thousands of staff to live, work and play. And he, of course, had the best of all.
It was there the leader planned to win the war between good and evil. The only problem is that his side was, according to the story line, the evil one. And it/he was defeated in the end. The U.S.Embassy in Iraq (er....I mean the New Babylon palace and its surroundings) in the end crumbled to the ground.
Could it be that those reading LaHaye's books got themselves a bit confused as to what role they should play in this story line?
